Two humble but ubiquitous verbs, be and do, are equally at home in classical philosophy and in pop culture. While Socrates conjectured, "To do is to be," his student Aristotle countered, "To be is to do." You can imagine the tension in the room. Then, of course, over against Socrates and Aristotle, there was Ol' Blue Eyes.
Frank Sinatra improvised a nonsensical riff--"do be do be do"--at the close of "Strangers in the Night," and transformed a song he personally despised into his distinctive musical signature. Later, the crooner's riff unwittingly inspired the identity of that animated canine sleuth, Scooby Doo. It should be noted, however, that neither Sinatra nor Scooby can take credit for inspiring the moniker of the renowned rock band, The Doobie Brothers. What a drag.
But, back to philosophy...
Be, representing character, and do, representing behavior, offer a framework for knowing life and--as Jesus named it--knowing it "to the full" (John 10:10). With a nod to Mr. Sinatra and his fellow songsters, the framework might look something like this--though admittedly lacking the rhythm of the crooner's version and, indeed, sounding more like the tuning of the orchestra rather than the composition itself:

One, be who you are, or authentic.
Two, do as you are, or aligned.
Three, do what you're doing, or aware.
Consider then...
One, what would it look like to live authentically, true to your unique values, vision, and voice--as your Creator "hardwired" you to be? In contrast, what does it look like when you try to be someone you're not? What's the price to be paid?
(Mr. Sinatra might have answered this inquiry with his anthem, "My Way."
Two, what would it look like to live with integrity, your behavior aligned with, reflective of, your character? In contrast, how much of your stress is the result of living "out of alignment"?
(Can you hear Mr. Sinatra warble the classic, "Body and Soul"?)
Three, what would it look like to live fully aware of, engaged with, present to, what you are doing, what you are saying, who you are with, right now? And now? And now? In contrast, what does it look like when your spirit is habitually somewhere else, doing something else, with someone else?
(Mr. Sinatra might pledge in song, "All of Me.")
What's the learning? Where's the "do-better place"? |
