What's in a name?
From the midst of a bush--a bush aflame but not consumed--God called Moses to lead Israel from Egypt. "Who am I?," Moses protested, his former pride diminished by forty lonely years tending sheep in the wilderness. God assured Moses, "I will be with you," to which Moses essentially replied, "But who are you?" (Exodus 3:1-14). Then, and to our point, God introduced himself with a most curious name, "I AM who I AM." "I AM," appearing in English as "Yahweh," or "Jehovah," reflects, one, God's ever-present, eternal nature--God cannot say, "I was" or "I will be; only, "I AM"--and, two, his faithfulness to his covenant people.

Later, Jesus declared his divine nature when he assumed the name, "I AM"; and seven times he combined the name of Jehovah with a metaphor to describe himself and his ministry: "I AM the bread of life...the light of the world...the door...the good shepherd...the resurrection and the life...the way, the truth and the life...the true vine." In Gethsemane on the eve of his crucifixion, Jesus asked the officials who came to arrest him, "Whom do you seek?" "Jesus the Nazarene," they replied." Jesus frightened his captors when he replied without pause, "I AM" (John 18:5).

Jehovah's name

The Hebrew letters that form the name of Jehovah, above, are pronounced, reading from right to left, yod (rhymes with "mode"), heh, vav (pronounced vahv), heh. Jewish scholars suggest that the letters were not so much spoken as breathed. Try it for yourself: speak softly on inhale, yod; on exhale, heh; on inhale, vav; on exhale, heh. God breathed the breath of life into our bodies and, to this day, our breath bears his imprint. Remarkably then, if this be true, when we draw our first breath as an infant and when we breathe our last, we speak the name of God.

But there's more...

Jehovah Hebrew stackedWhen the four Hebrew letters of Jehovah are stacked on
top of one another as illustrated to the right, something quite compelling shows up. What do you see? It's the logo of a first-century man--his head formed by yod; his shoulders and arms formed by heh; his trunk with a sash formed by vav; the bottom of his cloak and legs formed by heh. A compelling illustration that man was created in the image of God.

But there's more...

Each Hebrew letter has a distinctive meaning. The letter
heh means "behold"; the letter vav means "tent peg" or "nail"; and the letter yod means "hand." Thus, "heh, vav, heh, yod" eerily and prophetically reads, "Behold the nails. Behold the hands."

"Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and forever" (Psalm 113:2).

You can't make this stuff up.

How might the bush--aflame but not consumed--be an apt metaphor for the God who neither was nor will be, the God who is the "I AM."

We reflect God's name, "I AM," when we show up fully present before God and others--void of obsession of self, of the past (regret), or of the future (fear).

How might "breathing the name of God" bring you fully present and minimize anxiety?
