I find railroad tracks--in particular, the straight, parallel rails that extend and ultimately appear to converge on the distant horizon--intriguing, inviting.
As a youth in Lynwood, a suburb of Los Angeles, I'd walk the quiet rails that split Fernwood Avenue and lay between my home and middle school. Balancing on the rail with one foot, then the other as if negotiating a high wire; counting the worn, wooden ties 'neath the track; straining to see the point where the two rails unite in the distance. My thirteen-year old mind delighted in contemplating what destinations, what mysteries, what adventures, might be found at the track's terminus.
Four decades later, I still find railroad tracks intriguing, inviting.
Presently, however, the converging rails of the railroad track carry a deeper significance; they've become a metaphor unanticipated by a young boy just "leaving the station." The rails have come to represent divergent tracks of a lifetime of thought, learning, experience, themes, that might in my younger years have appeared--to press the metaphor--as the confusing morass of rails in a Chicago railroad yard.
But from life and the Lord have come clarity and discernment.
Some of those divergent rails have proven to be single-ended spurs, abandoned as no longer useful; other rails, however, have proven to traverse the landscape, converging upon the same destination.
It is in such convergence, I believe, that God is able to providentially bring clarity to our journey.
What's your experience around the convergence of thought, learning, experience, themes, in your life? What keeps showing up? Is there convergence between multiple themes? What does this convergence suggest about your felt purpose? What's the learning? What's the direction? Is there a "third rail" of peril that shadows your journey? What's your determination? |
