Ah! sweet mystery of life... |
I grew up in Los Angeles, a child of the 60s. Fortunately, however, I was young enough, naive enough, to be far more interested in Sandy Koufax and Willie Mays than I was in Timothy Leary and Henry Fonda's troubled kids. When I wasn't listening to Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett broadcast Dodgers games on the radio, I was listening to 93 KHJ's "Real Boss Radio" Top-40 and its legendary disc jockeys--talent with colorful handles such as "The Real Don Steele" and "Machine Gun Kelly." Playlists from AM radio featured artists who still tour some fifty years later and whose popularity, in some cases, is greater than their contemporary counterparts.
I had a difficult time as a small child understanding the concept of a radio broadcast. I knew enough to know that when Vin and Jerry were calling a Dodgers game, they were at that very moment ensconced in "the catbird seat"--a name that pioneering baseball announcer Red Barber might have used for a stadium's broadcast booth--sharing live their account of a Major League Baseball game. Why then should I think any differently when I listened to the chart-topping music featured on 93 KHJ?
Yes (this is so embarrassing...), I imagined a crowded waiting room at the offices of 93 KHJ where the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, and others patiently awaited their summons from the disc jockey behind the glass. I imagined Ringo Starr balancing his drum set on his lap, Mick Jagger cross-legged in a plastic chair flipping about his microphone and its cord like a small baton, while Brian Wilson sat in a quiet corner composing another innovative score to share with his family's surf band. I recall thinking musicians had an awfully tough gig to have to repeat this routine at radio stations throughout the city, only to revisit the circuit again every three hours or so. Did they carpool? And, like so may Angelenos, I didn't factor in how it all might work out in cities and horizons beyond my own.
When I was a child, my imagination was too small to think beyond the realities of my little world. I think back upon the many such misconceptions of my childhood when today I contemplate mysteries greater than AM radio: the relationship between eternity and time; the apparent contradiction of divine foreknowledge and human free will; the question of, "How much is sufficient?," and whether or not it's even the right question to ask; the practical implications of James' assertion that "mercy triumphs over judgment" (James 2:13); how the actions of one man, Adam, could corrupt God's good creation, while the actions of another man, Jesus, could reconcile God's good creation; what happens to the odd sock that disappears in the dryer.
How might we compare our inability to fathom divine mysteries with a man living in a one-dimensional world who's trying to comprehend life in a three-dimensional world?
What mysteries perplex you?
How do these mysteries affect you? Do they confuse you? Do they frustrate you? Do they cause you to doubt? Or do they merely intrigue your curiosity, perhaps even heighten your awareness?
How might you remain open to mystery while developing a sense of gratitude that God's imagination is bigger than yours?
