Snap, crackle, pop...

No, the sounds you're hearing are not the sounds of a popular breakfast cereal; rather, they're the sound of my becoming a well-adjusted human being on the table of my chiropractor's office.

I've benefited from chiropractic care since I was a teenager. These days, I'm treated by Dr. Lyndon Carpenter, a beloved friend and a skilled physician. I do, however, tend to vex him from time to time. As he tenderly cradles my head in his hands, attempting to "move" my neck, its muscles instinctively lock up. I hear Lyndon's voice from above gently encourage me:

"C'mon, Michael, let it go. Let me have it. Give it to me..."

Which reminds me...my first chiropractor was also a beloved friend. (I've found it to be wisdom to befriend those doctors who manipulate my bones and soft tissues.) The late Dr. C. Harold Havlik of Glendale, California was a pioneer in the field of chiropractic kinesiology. He was a physician, friend, and confidante. One day, many years ago, Hal was trying to move my neck. As he, too, tenderly cradled my head in his hands, I heard him softly chuckle and say:

"You know, Michael, if I was of a mind, I could kill you..."

Lovely man, but a rather sadistic sense of humor. And Lyndon wonders why the muscles in my neck lock up.

So here I am and, yet again, I hear a familiar voice gently encouraging me:

"C'mon Michael, let it go. Let me have it. Give it to me..."

But this time, it's not the voice of Dr. Lyndon Carpenter. It's instead what I imagine to be my heavenly Father's gentle plea to retreat--a strategic withdrawal--to recalibrate when required, to relinquish when called upon. This "letting go" is an uncomfortable space for many of us to occupy. It's a call to surrender personal agendas to participate in God's agenda; it's a call to surrender outcomes for process.

What does our impatience and anxiety suggest around our need to surrender to God?

If my neck muscles tighten at Lyndon's request, where might I--and you--tend to obstruct the Father's request for surrender?

What's the trade-off if we'll only give it over to the Father?
