The joy of discovery...

My grandfather, Otto Fox, was born in 1901 and passed in 1989. Consider the discoveries my grandfather witnessed within his lifetime. Here's a mere ten among many:

The inaugural flight of a gasoline-powered airplane

[Orville and Wilbur Wright, 1903]

The advent of the Model T

[Henry Ford, 1908]

The invention of the television

[John Baird, 1925]

The development of the first jet engine

[Frank Whittle von Ohain, 1937]

The production of the first electronic digital computer

[John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry, 1942]

The first usable electricity derived from nuclear energy

[National Reactor Testing Station, Idaho, 1951]

The first manned space flight

[Yuri Gagarin, Vostok 1, 1961]

The first men to walk on the moon

[Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, 1969]

The introduction of the first "personal" computer

[MITS Altair 8800, 1974]

The inaugural orbit of the space shuttle

[Columbia, 1981]

What's the learning? Well, first a reminder...

The psalmist testified, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands" [Psalms 19:1, NIV]. In addition, the scriptures testify of the one God's creative power when, "in the beginning," He "created the heavens and the earth": "God said...and it was so" [Genesis 1:1,6-7, 9, 11, 14-15, 24]. The psalmist confirmed that God spoke the worlds into existence from nothing:

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host...Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast [Psalm 33:6-9; cf. also Jeremiah 10:12-13].

And now for the learning...

Have you ever stopped to think that the systems that allow an airplane to fly, a car to drive, a television to broadcast, a jet engine to roar, a computer to, well, compute, a nuclear reactor to produce power and men to travel to the moon and back were all present--but as of then unknown--the morning when the first man and woman awakened in the quiet of the garden?

Can it be said that those who "discovered" the technology that made possible these discoveries within my grandfather's lifetime merely "uncovered" the work of the Creator?

Ever wonder, then, what else might remain to be uncovered within God's creation [cf. Psalm 8:3]? Where's the opportunity for you to become a "discoverer," or--perhaps better--an "uncoverer," of God's creation?

Ok, so you're not a rocket scientist...but remember that you yourself are a work of God's creative hand--you are "fearfully and wonderfully made" [Psalm 139:14]. What's "undiscovered" within you that's waiting to be "uncovered"?

Like creation itself, scripture is "God-breathed" [2 Timothy 3:16]. What's more powerful: the spoken word of God or the written word of God? Are you certain? Where's the opportunity for you to know the joy of discovery within scripture?
