A man of wisdom once confided in me--his words accompanied by a wry smile, "Do you know how to make God laugh? Tell him your plans."
In a move unforeseen just months ago, Kathy and I are scheduled to leave Northern California this week for our new home in northeastern Louisiana. Joy and sorrow are mingled within our hearts and minds; we are leaving a home, a community, a people we love for a home, a community, a people we love--two thousand miles distant.
Comfort would have declined the invitation from Louisiana; and yet comfort often travels--or, perhaps better, settles--in the company of complacency. A favorite writer offers the following insight around comfort and pain:
"There's a common misunderstanding among all the human beings who have ever been born on the earth that the best way to live is to try to avoid pain and just try to get comfortable...A much more interesting, kind, adventurous, and joyful approach to life is to begin to develop our curiosity, not caring whether the object of inquisitiveness is bitter or sweet. To lead a life that goes beyond pettiness and prejudice and always wanting to make sure that everything turns out on our own terms, to lead a more passionate, full, and delightful life than that, we must realize that we can endure a lot of pain and pleasure for the sake of finding out who we are and what this world is...If we're committed to comfort at any cost, as soon as we come up against the least edge of pain we're going to run; we'll never know what's beyond that particular barrier or wall or fearful thing" (Pema Chodron, The Wisdom of No Escape).
What's the lie about comfort? About pain?
Where's the place where opportunity meets pain for you? What's on the other side of the "barrier or wall or fearful thing" for you?
What does your faith or philosophy suggest of pain or discomfort? Does it address the cause or the symptoms; does it encourage embracement or detachment?
