No, this is not a car review...

This past Friday Kathy and I traveled to Oakland, where we met our nephew Daniel and Madhavi, the object of his affection. We met to hear Robben Ford--one the world's premier guitarists and, incidentally, Kathy's first cousin--perform live in concert.

Robben is a workmanlike musician, dedicated to blues and jazz, who has honed his craft for most of his fifty-nine years. He is a five-time Grammy nominee--losing most recently to that pesky Eric Clapton--who has played with such luminaries as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, George Harrison, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, Bob Dylan, John Mayall, Greg Allman, among others.

Robben's single-minded devotion to his craft and genre is evident in a conversation we shared over supper several years ago.

Kathy and I had viewed The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Mr. Leno's guest that night was a renowned male country music singer-songwriter who has been awarded eighteen Country Music Association Awards, won twenty Grammy Awards, and has sold over twenty million albums. During the conversation, Mr. Leno acknowledged his guest's prowess as a guitarist and asked him to identify his "guitar hero." Without pause, his acclaimed guest replied, "Blues guitarist, Robben Ford."

A short time later, Robben passed through the Sacramento area, and Kathy and I met him for supper. We told Robben of the conversation we witnessed on The Tonight Show and of his influence on the country music legend's career. Robben, a very gracious man, was visibly moved. "How lovely to hear," Robben said, but then asked, "Now, who's this fellow?"

Robben has a consuming passion for the blues--and not for much else; his passion for the blues is in large measure responsible for almost a half-century of success in a very fickle industry.

So...what's your consuming passion--if indeed you are driven by a consuming passion? If not, how might your life benefit from a consuming passion?

How might such a consuming passion be both a blessing and a curse? What's the reward...and the consequence?

Where might you benefit from greater balance: between spirit and flesh...spiritual and secular...work and play...family and neighbor...self-preservation and self-sacrifice...judgment and mercy...now and later...balls and strikes (oops, wrong article)?

What's the learning?
