Discover buried treasure...
|
Every child dreams of buried treasure, with visions of exotic locales, unanticipated discoveries and valuable caches. Even as the dreams of childhood become obscured by the realities of coming of age, the yearning for unexpected treasure nevertheless endures. Personally, buried treasure of any redemptive value has alluded me, unless you count the few coins I have salvaged from beneath the cushions of the couch, my own couch. Of course, the value of treasure--like the appreciation of beauty--is in the eye of the beholder.
One of my greatest treasures was discovered many years ago in a small, used books store in Monroe, Louisiana. I was digging through a pile of unsorted books that had been purchased in bulk from a store in Pennsylvania. Buried among the volumes was a copy of Fleetwood's Life of Christ, published in the mid-nineteenth century. The book itself, tattered and covered in coal dust, was unremarkable; what caught my attention were several treasures hidden between the leaves of the book. I found an obituary marking the death of a young woman, a newspaper clipping of a poem entitled, "A Flower from My Darling's Grave," a pressed flower and--this final discovery was at once exhilarating and haunting--a carefully braided lock of hair. It is sad to think that this book, once treasured by a man over a century ago, had in time been callously cast aside. Today, this book is treasured once more, as a personal favor to the unknown man of sorrow who first hid his precious stores within its pages.
Today, I have discovered a different kind of buried treasure. These priceless treasures are also buried within the pages of a book, within the pages of scripture. The apostle Paul assured his fellow believers in Colossae: "We have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding...in [Christ] are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" [Colossians 1:9; 2:3]. The distinctive treasures of knowledge [knowledge that is true, as opposed to "philosophy and empty deception"; Colossians 2:8], wisdom [the practical application of knowledge that is true] and understanding [the ability to perceive "the big picture"]: imagine, buried treasure!
What serendipitous discovery have you made in your lifetime that might be a metaphor for "buried treasure"?
What wisdom literature do you value as laden with treasure?
What energy and resources do you invest in the pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding?
What does your level of engagement suggest as to both your interest and your perceived value of the treasure?
