I hear voices...
But I'm not alone...so to speak.

We're all plagued by voices from without and, perhaps most disconcerting, from within. Voices that shout, "Who do you think you are?...Oh, really?," and, "Surely, you're not capable!," and, "No one of note holds you in that high of esteem!" These voices are loud and persistent; they are quite convincing and can lead to self-rejection and paralysis.

Jesus heard many voices from without, including voices of those who maligned the legitimacy of his birth, those who ascribed his power to Beelzebul, and those who questioned the veracity of his power [John 8:41; Mark 3:22; Luke 23:35]. And is it really so implausible to assume that Jesus, "who in every respect has been tempted as we are," heard the same voices from within that cause us to question our very identity: Voices that shout, "Who do you think you are?...Oh, really?," and, "Surely, you're not capable!," and, "No one of note holds you in that high of esteem!"

Most biblical scholars agree that Jesus performed no miraculous sign prior to the day when the Spirit descended upon him, following his immersion by John; no miraculous sign to confirm either to himself or to others the truth of his identity and his ministry. Why then do we assume that the Father's voice--the voice of confirmation heard that very same day, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased"--was a familiar and even routine voice to Jesus?

What are your thoughts, upon learning that Jesus passed thirty birthdays ere receiving confirmation of his identity? What's the learning--the rubber-meets-the-road learning?

Is there a part of you that wants to push back on the possibility? A part of you--like a part of Peter before you (John 13:6-8)--that feels it must protect Jesus from the full implications of his humanity?

What is the voice of truth within you that, consistently through the years, has struggled to be heard over the voices of opposition--voices from within and without?

Consider...ultimately, like Jesus, our value rests in the testimony of the Father's voice: the voice that declared of Jesus, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased"; the voice that affirms of all his children, "I will call 'my people...Beloved"
(Romans 9:25).
