Curious about
your point of reference...
In the East Bay of Northern California, ascending above and to the east of the picturesque towns of Walnut Creek and Danville, is a distinctive summit known as Mount Diablo. Mount Diablo, with its familiar twin peaks, is visible from most of the Bay Area and from much of Northern California. The mountain itself, at just over 3800 feet, is rather unremarkable; it's notable, however, for its selection in 1851 as surveyors' "initial point," the spot where the base and meridian lines intersect and the reference point from which much of the land in California, Nevada, and Oregon was surveyed.

Just in case you're ever asked...

The Land Ordinance of 1785 created a system of base lines--running east and west--and meridian lines--running north and south--used to survey the western lands beyond the country's initial thirteen colonies. Along these lines, land was divided into blocks of six square miles, called "townships." Each township is assigned a number; east and west numbers are referenced by the term "range" and the north and south numbers are referenced by the term "township." Each township is divided into thirty-six square-mile parcels of 640 acres, called "sections." Each section is assigned a number from 1 to 36. These one-mile square sections are quite recognizable in California's rural areas, often bounded by country roads and fence lines. Each section can be further divided into halves, quarters, and so on...

And now you know.

To this day, legal property descriptions are identified by this system of base lines and meridian lines. And, throughout much of California, these lines are referenced from modest Mount Diablo. By the way, if you'd ever like to drop by our Auburn, California home for a visit, you'll find us at SW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of S10 T12N R8E Mount Diablo California. So, what's the point?

Or, perhaps better, what's your point, your "initial point," your personal "Mount Diablo"?...This metaphor would be much more powerful if Mount Diablo was instead called, oh say, Mount Jehovah...What person, what book, what value, what ever, defines your boundaries, encourages your development, determines your direction?

What's the importance of an "initial point" that is "true," that is proven?

What's the source of your confidence in your declared "initial point"?
