Hide or seek...

I love the ocean.

I love to gaze upon the waters and to listen to the sound of the surf as the waves...retreat and advance...exhale and inhale...expire and inspire. In the ocean I sense the very presence of the Creator, breathing and speaking through his creation.

But, oblivious to it all is the little boy with his head in the sand. What's your sense about the youngster? Is he hiding something? Is he seeking something?

Which leads me to wonder...How might you connect with the activity of this youngster? Are you hiding something? Are you seeking something? How does your preoccupation show up in your life? In your relationships? What's possible? What would it look like to "name," to "declare," your preoccupation, and to invite a trusted companion to join you, to help you dig deeper?

Which leads me to wonder, too...
Isaac Newton recalled, "I was like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me."

What "lay all undiscovered" before you--what "something bigger" might be eluding you--as your preoccupation distracts you? Look again at the youngster in the sand. What if he is neither hiding nor seeking, but just curious? How might you show up in life, neither hiding nor seeking, but just curious? How might life show up in you?

The poet Rainer Maria Rilke reflected on the sea, "When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused."

Close your eyes for a moment. Breathe out and then in...slowly and deliberately. As you listen to the sound of your own breathing, can you connect with the sound of the surf? What would it look like to "go to the sea," as the poet testified--to take yourself there in meditation regardless of where you are? To allow the sea to drown out your anxiety with its great wide sounds, to cleanse you with its noise, to impose a rhythm upon everything in you that is bewildered and confused?

I love the ocean.
