Charles Dodgson (1832-1898) was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. You may know him by his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll; he penned, among other works of "literary nonsense," Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Alice is a bit too Wizard-of-Ozish for my taste. I find stories of encounters with bizarre characters while lost and away from home rather dark and disturbing. One of Wonderland's eccentrics, the Cheshire Cat, did, however, speak with wisdom--albeit in a creepy sort of way--in the following exchange with young Alice...
"Cheshire-Puss," she began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name: however, it only grinned a little wider. "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where--" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.
"--So long as I get somewhere," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."
Where are you headed? Really.
Do you know "where you want to get to"? What's your vision?
Who do you have to be, what do you have to do, to get there?

No kidding, but don't you find the image of a grinning, sarcastic, now-you-see-him-now-you-don't, philosophizing feline kind of disturbing?
