The Divine Proportion...
In 1908, Charles Lalo--a renowned French researcher in the field of aesthetics [that is, the study of psychological responses to beauty and artistic experiences]--conducted an intriguing experiment. Lalo arranged a set of ten rectangular cards before participants in the study. Each card was identical in width; however, the length of the cards varied in proportion to the width, ranging from 1:1 [in other words, a square] to 2:5 [that is, the length two-and-a-half times its width]. Participants were asked to identify the one rectangle that they intuitively preferred from among the ten. Lalo's research confirmed the aesthetic preference for what had long been labeled "the Golden Rectangle," a rectangle with a length just over sixty percent longer than its width [or, to be precise, a ratio of 1:1.618]. Nearly a third of the participants [30.3%] favored the Golden Rectangle; further, close to half [47.6%] selected either the Golden Rectangle or the rectangles to its immediate left or right.

Enough math. I promise that the point will be evident in a moment.

For centuries, painters, sculptors, architects, composers, writers and mathematicians have recognized the significance and attraction of the Golden Rectangle, or "the Golden Ratio." Leonardo da Vinci's drawing of The Vitruvian Man [aka, "Human Figure in a Circle"], Polykleitos' sculpture of Doryphoros the Spear Bearer [you would recognize it if you saw it] and such engineering marvels as the Parthenon in Athens, the Great Pyramid of Egypt and the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris are among the countless wonders of human creativity that incorporate the Golden Rectangle.

What infuses the Golden Rectangle, the Golden Ratio, with such power and attraction?
Perhaps the answer lies deep within the design of creation. For the Golden Ratio is evident in the spiral pattern of both the shell of a nautilus and the seeds of a sunflower; it can be found in the proportion of both the body of a trout and the face of a man; it is perceived in the pentagonal shape of both a snowflake and the pattern of seeds within an apple. The Golden Ratio--evident in these and countless other examples from nature--appears to be an imprint of the Divine Designer. [In fact, both the ark of Noah and the ark of the covenant embody the Golden Ratio.] Indeed, long before the Golden Ratio was called, well, the Golden Ratio, the number was referred to as the Divine Proportion.

Perhaps the power and attraction of the Golden Ratio lies in the subconscious recognition of the Creator by those whom He created.

Is the Golden Ratio, aka the Divine Proportion, just too cool?

Where else do you see the
imprint of the Divine Designer upon creation?

In terms of character, where might others recognize the imprint of the Divine Designer in you?
