"The perfect law of liberty..."
Did you know...there is an oft-unanticipated benefit that mitigates any personal cost of the second greatest commandment, "love your neighbor as yourself." This benefit is an underlying theme of the New Testament letter of James, the written by brother of Jesus...

Love, or "Do what is best for another," is a recurring theme in James' epistle. Observe:

This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father, to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world...if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes...have you not made distinctions among yourselves...Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith...you have dishonored the poor man....judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment...If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,' and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?

Within this context of impartial, proactive love, James observes, "If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law, according to the Scripture, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself,' you are doing well" [James 2:28]. Twice in his epistle, James refers to the royal law-the commandment that Jesus reckoned as second only to "Love God heart, soul, mind and strength"-as the "perfect law, the law of liberty" [James 1:25; 2:12].

Consider this...how is it that the royal law--"You shall love your neighbor as yourself--can be rightfully called, "the law of liberty"?

What, then, is the oft-unanticipated benefit that mitigates any personal cost of the second greatest commandment? [Cf. James 4:1-3].

Comprehending this benefit, what's keeping you from loving?
