"Delight yourself in the Lord..."
|
Is it possible that men and women today have lost sight of the satisfaction, the joy, the fullness, the contentment, that God desires of His children? David urged his readers, "Delight yourself in the LORD; and he will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4). A companion in verse to David declared, "As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for Thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God?" (Psalm 42:1-2). Again, "O God, Thou art my God; I shall seek Thee earnestly; my soul thirsts for Thee, my flesh yearns for Thee, in a dry and weary land where there is no water" (Psalm 63:1). Solomon, the Psalmist's son, declared that God "has put eternity into man's heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11, ESV).
C.S. Lewis, during a sermon preached at Oxford in June of 1942, observed: "If you asked twenty good men today what they thought the highest of the virtues, nineteen of them would reply, Unselfishness. But if you had asked almost any of the great Christians of old, he would have replied, Love. You see what has happened? A negative term has been substituted for a positive...The negative idea of Unselfishness carries with it the suggestion not primarily of securing good things for others, but of going without them ourselves, as if abstinence and not their happiness was the important point. I do not think this is the Christian virtue of Love" (The Weight of Glory).
It is God's desire that we transform our passions--not disregard them, shifting our focus from satisfying the desires of our flesh to satisfying the desires of our spirit. When we consciously choose to love God heart, soul, mind, and strength and our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31) and thus seek to fulfill the desires of our spirit, or inner man, the promise of the beatitudes will be ours, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God [Matthew 5:8].
