Secure Your Web Site and Inspire Trust
Every business has the potential to grow on the web. You have the opportunity to reach more customers, in more places with your products and services. Due to the prevalence of counterfeit Web sites on the Internet, it is important to create a web presence that is both secure and trusted. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificates keep your online business private and inspire trust with your customers.
SSL certificates keep online interactions private even though they travel across the public Internet. An SSL certificate is a bit of code on your web server. When a web browser contacts your secured web site, the SSL certificate enables an encrypted connection. It's kind of like sealing a letter in an envelope before sending it through the mail.
SSL certificates inspire trust in your web site and your business. When you request an SSL Certificate, your information is validated and you are issued a unique certificate. When users visit your secured web site, they see that your identity has been validated by a Third-party Certificate Authority (CA). As a result, your customers will know that the site they're interacting with is actually yours.
There are several different levels of validation that back SSL Certificates depending on the certificate and the CA.
The level of identity authentication assured by a CA is a significant differentiator between SSL Certificates. The growth of phishing and other fraudulent Web sites designed to steal information from consumers has put a spotlight on the authentication strength of various SSL Certificates and the identity authentication process. There are three commonly recognized categories of SSL authentication; Extended Validation (EV), organization authentication, and domain authentication.
Extended Validation Authentication Extended Validation (EV) authentication is the highest level of authentication available with an SSL Certificate. Any Web site with an established brand reputation should consider the benefits of an SSL Certificate with EV authentication. New, high-security browsers identify these Web sites as authenticated by prominently displaying a green address bar and security status bar with the name of the verified organization that owns the Web site. These certificates are by far the most noticeable forms of identity authentication based on SSL technology by consumers.
Consider SSL Web Server with EV if the following applies:
- The identity of your organization and your brand is a core asset that needs to be protected from phishers.
- You want to assure Web site visitors of the safety of your site in order to increase consumer confidence and reduce your transaction abandonment rate.
- Your Web site visitors need to exchange personal and financial information via the Web site and you need to make sure that this information is secure
- You want the highest available authentication at a reasonable price.
Organization Authentication Organization authentication, also known as business identity authentication, is a high assurance level of authentication. SSL Certificates with this level of authentication require verification of an organization's existence through a government issued business credential such as article of incorporation or a business license.
SSL Web Server is a good choice if the following applies:
- Your Web site visitors need to exchange personal information via the Web site and you need to assure them that their information is secure.
- You need to assure customers of your online business identity.
Domain Authentication Domain authenticated certificates are the lowest form of authentication available and are appropriate for organizations concerned primarily with encryption. An entity requesting a domain authenticated certificate will go through a process to help verify that they either own the domain requested or that they have the right to use that domain name. Additionally, the email address for the contact requesting the certificate is verified as either listed in the WHOIS directory or meets the CA's predetermined email alias requirements.
Consider SSL 123 Certificates if the following applies:
- High levels of authentication are not a priority.
- You need to protect information exchange between you and your customers.
- You need a certificate issued in minutes and do not wish to submit the paperwork associated with fully-authenticated certificates.
- Your brand is not established yet, so you are not concerned with identity protection or guarding against phishing attacks.
Citynet works exclusively with a root Certificate Authority to assure our customers that every SSL Certificate is signed with a reliable and ubiquitous root. Citynet customers don't have to worry that they will end up with Web site visitors not protected by their SSL Certificate because there is a problem with the underlying SSL root.
Contact Citynet today at 800.903.8906 and we'll help you determine which SSL Certificate is right for your business. |

Laptop Security Tips for the Business Traveler

Some tips for reducing the risk of a glitch when you're away from the office:
Protect Your Passwords Many companies have special passwords and access numbers for employees to use when they're off-site. Avoid the temptation to jot them down on a scrap of paper you keep with your laptop. Don't use shortcut keys to program passwords, access codes, or credit card numbers.
Keep Things in Sight Pre-Flight According to a company that insures personal computers, 10% of laptop thefts occur in airports. Keep your eye on your electronic devices when going through airport screening. Don't put your smartphone or computer on the conveyor belt until the person directly ahead of you has made it through the metal detector.
Watch Prying Eyes A survey of business travelers found that a third of them 'fessed up to sneaking a peek at an airplane seatmate's computer screen. Defer work on confidential client files until you're away from prying eyes. Or consider buying a filter for your laptop screen.
Leave No Trail Ever taken a look at the documents some travelers leave on the computer at the hotel business center? And just think of the sensitive information blurted out during loud cell phone conversations. Remind your employees to keep their guard up in public. You never know who might be listening.
"Wipe" It Out Business travelers often are the first in line for the latest electronic device, but need to take care before disposing of the old one. When getting rid of computers and cell/smartphones, deleting files using keyboard commands may not be sufficient because data can remain on a device's memory. Check with your IT staff for them to use a "wipe" utility program that can overwrite the memory so data is no longer recoverable.
