New improvements to The Center
Many recent improvements have been made at the center. A new and larger septic tank has been installed and is now being utilized.
Also hurricane shutters (see photo at right) were installed on three of sections of dog kennels which will make the storms easier to deal with. In the past we would cover the front of the kennels with tarps--not a very efficient way to keep the pooches dry and cozy!

Shade was added to the front of the building and you now enter into the shelter with a swinging door instead of the old kennel door that was there before (see photo at left).
We are also working on expanding our office with an area for consultations and surgeries which will be separated from the office area. Adriana Pierce Martinez, a longtime supporter, was instrumental in helping us with the recent improvements. She sponsored Ismael to work with us the last couple of months so that we were able to complete these projects. ************************* Shelter Statistics for Aug-Oct 2010

Love comes when you least expect it...
Adopting Seņor was probably the farthest thing from our mind the night Pete and I went to the Annual Golf and Silent Auction affair at the Cabo Del Sol Resort. We have loved and have supported every major function the Humane Shelter has held for the five years we have lived in Cabo and always have come home with fun winnings from the Silent Auctions...but not with a cat or dog. After all, we have 3-4 other cats at home already!!
After a delightful dinner, some bidding on great events--which we did win a few--we were leaving the event going by the animals in cages up for adoption. As we walked by, a number of delightful humane shelter volunteers were there, getting the not so lucky animals that had not been adopted that night ready to go back to the shelter. That's when it ALL started!
Our reputation is out--we like cats--and like I said already had had 4-5 all the time since moving to Cabo. Before we knew it...we met Seņor. What a beautiful cat he was! Big Frank Sinatra eyes, beautiful markings and BIG! Seventeen pounds as we found out later! The cage was opened, and there he was in my arms--a gentle soul he was. Trusting, calm, and Big like I said! I liked him...immediately. I had my husband, Pete hold him, and the promptings were...well, they were there from Maggie, Ginny, Aida and others!! Take him, he's is our favorite! Everyone loves Seņor! You will too, they all said.
Pete and I looked at each other, and well, he was hard to resist. Nice temperament, beautiful...and those eyes!! I said to Pete."I am in if you are," and he just looked at me (ladies, when they don't say anything right away, that is a good sign!) Pete agreed and we said yes. We were assured that if it didn't work out we could return him and that helped a little, but I think I knew in my heart it would be okay.
Seņor is now the alpha in our home and it has been delightful to have him in our family and to see him actually have a home he can call his own. He has become a family member, loves his treats every morning, and even has become a bit of a beggar in the softest and gentlest "mew" when I am cooking. Of course, I do soften they all said--can you imagine living in a cage for two or more years? And then becoming free? And being so lucky to have a family that loves you and takes good care of you? I think he really does appreciate us, and I get a gentle kiss from him every now and then when we lie together and I pet him.
Many of us, like Pete and I, that already have animals think--one more? Oh no, that will be too much. But let me say this: opening our hearts and letting one more in--one more cat, one more dog, one more needy animal--does really more than just give an animal a home. It helps us realize the expansive power of love, the expansive power of saying yes, the expansive power of being open.
Try it today. Try it this week.Try it at the next Humane Shelter event, or better yet--just do it the Nike way, and...Just Do It! You will be glad, and so will that new member of your family.
And thank you from the heart of the world...the best people in earth..the needy animals of the world. CHS, Canacintra and Golden Palace organized the 1st Los Cabos Dog Festival. Many families of the area came out to show of their dogs and participate in the different categories. It was an opportunity to promote responsible pet ownership, adoption and spay neuter. We look forward to next year! *************************

We also have 15 high school students doing their social service (which is required to graduate) with us, performing different activities like dog walking, playing with the cats, office work, general cleaning etc. If you'd like to volunteer contact,

Holiday Pet Hazards Whether you spend the holidays here in Los Cabos or at home, please don't forget to include your pets. The holidays are a time for giving, but there are some things you should not share with your furry friends. Take some precautions and prevention to make the holidays a happy time for everyone.
Electrical cords--Holiday lights mean more electrical cords for kittens and puppies to chew. Be sure you have cords secured and out of the way.
Candles--Lighted candles should never be left unattended and that is even more important if left at kitty's eye level or within a puppy's chewing zone. An exuberant tail or a swat of a paw can turn candles and hot wax into an instant disaster.
Pine needles--Check around holiday trees frequently. Ingested pine needles can puncture your pet's intestines.
Holiday tree--Make sure your tree is well secured. If you have a tree-climbing cat or large dog with a happy tail, anchor the top of the tree to the wall, using strong cord or rope. Preservatives often used in the water in a tree stand can cause gastric upsets, so be sure it is inaccessible or not used. Avoid sugar and aspirin additives in the water as well.
Ornaments--Sharp or breakable ornaments, Hanukkah dreidels, and even aluminum foil should be kept out of reach. String objects, especially tinsel and ribbons are thin and sharp and can wrap around intestines or ball up in the stomach.
Stress and company--With everyone coming and going, watch out for open doors and sneaky pets. Make sure your pets have updated collars and tags on in case of escape. Microchipping your pet will also help if your pet escapes. All pets should have at least two forms of identification on them at all times. Provide a special quiet place with a blanket and fresh water for your pets to retreat to when the festivities get too stressful.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
