Meet Loba...
Loba has been with us almost a year. She was surrendered along with her kennelmate Eva by their owner who decided she no longer wanted her and was planning to take them out to the
dump. Loba is going on 10 years old and she is a sweet, quiet dog who is
low maintenance and is looking for a home where she can spend her Golden years.

Picking up strays
Once a week a member of
the Los Cabos Humane Society joins the staff from the municipal government's
Public Services (Servicios Publicos) in a roundup of stray animals in the
neighborhoods (colonias) of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Almost 800 strays have been picked up so far
during this summer's program. On average
of 25 dogs are picked up each day during the round-up. Ninety-five per cent of the animals collected are too sick to
test for distemper or we follow the usual Humane Society intake protocol. These
animals are fed, comforted and then humanely euthanized by our staff
veterinarian. Even though this is a very
difficult task for our staff, our presence during these round-ups is crucial to
these animals being handled with compassion during their last hours. In Los Cabos there is no
government-run animal control facility or services. The Los Cabos Humane Society is performing
the role and taking on the responsibilities that would normally be performed by
the "antirrabico" or dog pound. It is
very sad for us to be involved in this aspect of rescue here in Los Cabos but
we recognize that we are the best option for these animals to receive humane
treatment. The government has no budget
for animals services and the Humane Society provides all of the medication used
during the euthanasia process.
If you see stray animals, please call us at 044 (624) 129-8346 or 044 (624) 151-6046. *************************

Calling all animal lovers!
Are you:
- Grateful for
the free spay neuter and low-cost
vaccinations services provided by LCHS?
- Glad that there are not more sick, suffering and dying
animals on our streets?
Once again, the volunteers at the Humane
Society Center have decreased to only a few people. Please don't leave all
of the work to only a few dedicated volunteers.
There are 154 hours in a week--we are asking
for only TWO of them. We need dedicated people who will come once a week to walk our dogs. Otherwise, they're stuck in their small kennels every day in this summer heat. Getting enough exercise and human contact makes them more adoptable!
It only takes two
hours when there are three or more volunteers. It is fun and friendly--scroll down to What's Happening in 2010 in this newsletter to see the variety of volunteer walking opportunities.
The homeless dogs and
cats need you!

 Meet our new vet...
MVZ Cristobal "Cristo" Cosio joined LCHS as our new staff veterinarian this summer. He is a native of Santiago, B.C.S., Mexico, and graduated from the first
class at the La Paz Veterinary School.
He has volunteered his time at some our previous spay/neuter clinics.
Dr. Alan Ortiz, our previous staff vet, has moved on to other projects, but will continue to volunteer at our surgical
clinics.
Dr. Cristo works at the center from 8 am - 4 pm; his hours for outside consults are 10 am to 3 pm Sunday- Friday. He is off on Mondays.
For
spay/neuter appointments, please call our shelter manager Evaristo at 044-624-129-8346.

Our shelter dogs strut their stuff Our shelter dogs (with their volunteer walkers) were featured in a fashion show produced by the clothing stores at the new Plaza Sendero Mall. Dr. Mariana, owner of the new pet store--Spoilt Pets--contacted LCHS President Aida Trujillo and invited her to bring some canine "models" from the shelter. There were also some local pets drafted to participate as models. It was a big production with a huge stage, lighting, a DJ and a projector for entertainment. Aida was on hand to educate the crowd on the importance of humane treatment of animals.

A Nice day for a 'Ciclovia'Shelter volunteers take our shelter dogs for a Sunday Ciclovia (stroll). This downtown San Lucas street is closed each Sunday morning for locals and tourists to walk, ride their bike, skate, etc. and enjoy a beautiful summer day. *************************In
July LCHS President Aida Trujillo and board member Miroslava Bautista
attended the Eagle's Wings Foundation grant ceremony and accepted a
donation of $5,000 USD for LCHS. Through the
vision of Villa del Palmar timeshare owner Jim McCarthy, EWF was the
first
non-profit of its kind in Los Cabos. Other owners were provided with
an avenue to give back to the "paradise" they had come to love as their
vacation
home. The philanthropic funding given through the Eagle's Wings Grants
provides the momentum needed by several grass roots organizations. "Bibi
Flores, a long time LCHS supporter who works for EWF, encouraged me to
submit a grant application," said Trujillo. Other local groups
receiving grants included: Amigos de los Ninos, Red Autismo, Green
scholarship, Galento, Ninos del Capitan, and Sarahuaro. Delegado
Ibarras (a government representative) could not attend, but the person representing him at the meeting spoke about each of the groups and thanked them for the services they provide and all the lives
that have been touched or saved by each group's hard work and
dedication. "The LCHS save lives--not just the lives of the
animals they protect but human lives as
well. By helping the government in controlling the animal population they
prevent the spread of deadly diseases like Riquetsia (tick born
disease) and other diseases that have an impact on our community,"
Ibarras added. "I felt very proud hearing that the hard work our
wonderful staff and
volunteers contribute toward the public health of our communities is
being
recognized," said Trujillo. ************************* A big thank you !
Angelique Garren donated this Dodge Ram in loving memory of her father Earl
"Lee" Garren: 10/29/37 - 3/4/10. Last year Connie Bloem donated this
truck to LCHS. Both
vehicles will be used for rescue, Spay/Neuter, trips to the airport and for every
day activities. We are extremely thankful for these generous donations which have facilitated
our work. LCHS is also in need of in-kind donations such as vehicles, construction materials, outdoor furniture, etc. Check our Wish List for other items we need. There is no governmental agency to address the problem of homeless domestic animals
living on the streets of Cabo San Lucas. The Humane Society of Cabo San Lucas
is operating as the only form of animal protection and control.
The LOS CABOS HUMANE SOCIETY is dedicated to providing the community with animal control services and to create an environment free of homeless dogs and cats. We promote the humane treatment of domestic animals through education, pet population control, rescue and adoption.
The Humane Society de Cabo San Lucas, A. C. is operating as a legal non-profit civil
association in Mexico and as the Humane Society de Cabo San Lucas, Inc., a non-profit
U.S. corporation with tax exempt status under section 501 (C) (3)
