Meet Abril
Hola, My name is Abril
- or April in English. I'm bi-lingual as
you can see. My owners brought me to the Los Cabos Humane Society
shelter almost a year ago after I had a litter of kittens! Alan the nice
vet at
the shelter made sure that wouldn't happen again!
Life here at
the shelter can be difficult at times with all those dogs
barking. They don't seem to have "inside voices". Don't get me wrong,
I've made lots of friends here--both feline and human. I get delicious
food
and a great play area outdoors. But it doesn't take the place of a
forever home.
I really would like to have a human teddy bear I
can snuggle up
with. I'm told that I am really beautiful and I have a wonderful purr.
My
best friend Señor has been adopted and now I want to be too!
Please
come
and visit me!

Rocky Update! Rocky and Chila
finally went to their forever home! They are together in a big yard
where their new owners are constructing a home behind the BMW Dealership
on the
road to Todos Santos.
**************************************************** Dog Walkers
Still Needed!
We now have a total of 24
people confirmed as dogwalkers. We still need a Friday morning slot
filled and we need people for all of the afternoon slots except
Mondays.
We want to
thank the many volunteers who are dedicating some of their free time to
giving our shelter
dogs and cats love and attention. Our dog walker team is growing
and making a big difference!

 Evaristo
Castro Rosas is the LCHS Center Manager and in charge of all operations
and has worked for the Los Cabos Humane Society since April 2008. He is originally
from Santiago, Baja California Sur and has lived in Cabo San Lucas since 1991
and is married and has one daughter. He has experience in the restaurant
industry and a background in sales for Coca Cola and Red Bull.. Q: What
is your philosophy and objective for the operation of the LCHS Center? A: I have respect for all of the animals
and a high regard for their health, so that they can one day live in a better
place. Q: What
are some of the challenges that you are presented with as manager of the
Center? A: We want to educate the public and teach them how to be more
sensitive to animals. We try to find
ways to make people aware of the diseases that can be caused by ticks, etc .in
animals that are not properly cared for. We need them to know that these
diseases can by transmitted to humans and can be deadly. Q: How
can volunteers and the public help you in your efforts to run the Center
successfully? A: We need people to walk dogs and monitor
their bodily functions to alert us to any possible problems. Volunteers can help us by bathing animals
and showing them affection. We also need
volunteers to spend time with our cats and be sure that their area and beds are
nice and comfy. People can also help by spreading the word about the importance
of the Spay/Neuter and vaccination services that we provide. "I am happy running the LCHS Center and I am
grateful for the opportunity to learn and to teach others how to properly care
for animals. I am always open to suggestions or ideas about ways to improve
the operations of the Center. Volunteers
are much needed and always encouraged to spend time with us," he added.

Pawsitive Match...
...Over 500 Dogs and Counting! Since 2007, Los Cabos dogs have found new, loving homes
thanks to the hard work of Pawsitive Match, a non-profit, "no kill" rescue
group based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Thanks to founder and director Varnita
Hewitt, Pawsitive Match saves dogs facing life-threatening circumstances in Mexico, Canada,
and United States. Last year they
donated $20,000 back to LCHS from their adoption fees. Varnita recognized the need to help when she arrived in San
José del Cabo in 1997. "Like many others, I was appalled at the condition of
the dogs. I used to go out and feed the worst of the worst in the areas I
traveled. When the San Jose
shelter opened in 2005, I started to volunteer. "When rumors started circulating in spring of 2007 that the San Jose shelter would
close-thus causing the remaining 18 dogs to be euthanized, I asked Donna Ohlson for help. I had met her on a plane from
Calgary when she was heading to Cabo on vacation, and I offered to show her the
shelter. After her initial visit she fell in love with Mexican dogs and became dedicated
to rescue. In June, Varnita, Donna
and Mirella brought together a group of people in the Calgary area who had
heard about the rescue efforts in Los Cabos and wanted to help. These three
became founders and are the current directors today. On July 1, 2007, Pawsitive Match was officially born. After the success of finding homes for those initial
dogs, Varnita called Aida Trujillo, humane society president, with a proposal to
transport dogs from the local shelter to Pawsitive Match and find them
homes. "I thought Aida would think I was
crazy, but she recognized my sincerity and a wonderful relationship was born,"
Varnita said. That first summer Varnita and her husband were building a
new house in Querencia, just out of San José, and she was traveling to Los Cabo
on a weekly basis. At the end of 12 weekly visits that summer, she had taken
back 50 dogs from the Cabo area. "Getting three large crates filled with dogs
through the airport and customs was often a challenge. It was tiring, but so rewarding when I saw
how excited the adopters were when they met their new dog at the airport." Since then, they have found homes for 900 dogs worldwide and
continue to place 30 dogs a month in forever homes. Vets from Calgary have come
to Los Cabos Humane Society to assist at spay/neuter clinics. Volunteers from
Pawsitive Match have come down for vacations and ended up helping at the
shelter and then taking dogs back as well. "It has been an ongoing partnership between Mexico and Calgary for the
good of the dogs," she added. "Our ongoing success would not have been possible without
the hard work, dedication and love of animals from our foster homes, the
adoption and foster committees and many volunteers. But most of all, the
wonderful adopters who have given our Cabo dogs forever homes," Varnita said. And to get the dogs
to Calgary,
they need YOU to help with transport. Pawsitive Match is always looking for
people to bring these dogs to wonderful new homes. If you could take a dog on a flight with you (someone meets you at the airport ) please contact Aida at 624 151 5842 or

Faro's Happy Ending President Aida Trujillo woke early one morning to
answer a phone call from her friend Jorge on his morning run. Jorge had
discovered a dog near the old light house. His mouth was wired shut and he had
wounds showing all four legs had been wired together. The dog had managed to
free two of his legs and was dragging himself along the road. He was rushed
to the Cabo Pet Hospital and it was determined he had survived at least 2 days
unable to move or open his mouth in the hot desert sun. This pitiful dog
was named Faro (for lighthouse) and remained at the clinic for two weeks.
Volunteers Susan and Armando generously offered to take Faro into their home
for a short foster period. Faro blossomed in their care but it was only a
temporary foster home because they were moving back to Vancouver, Canada.
The
happiest news for all of Faro's friends at the Humane
Society came when Susan and Armando asked to adopt Faro. When they were
settled in their new home they realized how much they missed Faro and wanted
him to be a permanent member of their family. Hola
everyone, I had such a great day today in my new home in Canada!
I decided it was the perfect moment to update you on all that's been
going on in my new life. Summer is so great! It gets up to 80 degrees here, but
you barely notice it because of the fresh breezes, we don't even need air
conditioning. I love it! I'm really happy. I wag my tail whenever Susan or Armando comes
home. When I am particularly excited to see them I bounce all around our
house like a bucking bronco. I have so much energy and love showing it off! My vet here in Canada recommended special pet food that makes my fur super
shiny like a pearl. I used to have a limp from where my leg was broken,
but now I don't limp at all. I feel so good!
We've been having so much fun. We stopped by a big waterfall and all
these lakes and I had so much fun. I love exploring in the forest. I
thought my life couldn't get any better until Armando and Susan took me on this
awesome long hike on Mount Seymour. We
walked through the woods for hours until we reached a place called - get
this - DOG Mountain! I loved the view
of the whole city from Dog Mountain. Ahh, the alpine breezes! I was
so excited about all the smells and obstacles and hills on the trail that I
didn't even realize how tired I was until I got back to the car and slept all
the way home.
We
stayed in a hotel called Fairmont Chateau Whistler which was super nice
and get this - they LOVE dogs! My room was supposed to come
with my own special doggy bed, water bowl and pet treats but when they
ran out
(because there were so many dogs in the hotel) they cancelled the usual
pet fee
and let me stay with my parents in their beautiful room without charging
them a
dime! They even said I could sleep on the second bed for humans!
(Susan and Armando never let me do that at home. Sigh!). Just wanted to let you know how happy I am. I smile and laugh all the time
now. Thanks again for rescuing me and giving me this new life. I feel like the
luckiest dog in the world, but Armando and Susan say that they're the lucky ones. Love you all! Faro Susan
