Dear Subscriber,

One of the most enjoyable aspects of my work is the opportunity to interact with patients who are undergoing assay-directed therapies. My staff particularly enjoys assisting patients from afar who arrive in need of therapeutic direction and then depart with a solid game plan in hand. In addition to patients from Southern California and the United States, we have had the good fortune of working with patients from other parts of the world, including Australia and Brazil. Indeed, through our collaboration with one of the leading medical oncologists in South America, we are regularly receiving specimens from Brazil. Whether our interactions are face-to-face or laboratory-based, the good outcomes of our patients are deeply gratifying.

In addition to our work guiding the treatments of individual patients, we have had the good fortune to collaborate with scientific colleagues as we help develop the next generation of cancer therapeutics. Our most recent collaboration  with scientists from NYU and Cornell, studying compounds that inhibit the cell pathway knows as Wnt, was the subject of the lead article in the April 12, 2011 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Scientists.

Above and beyond my duties in the clinic and laboratory, I have the opportunity to participate in educational programs, through the kind support of the Vanguard Cancer Foundation. In June, I will be speaking at a cancer conference in Northern California discussing the use of laboratory-directed therapy (2011 Oncology Symposium, Gallo Center for the Arts, Modesto, CA June 18). We are also continuing our collaboration with investigators in New Orleans on the development of new treatments for neuroendocrine tumors.

My team and I are committed to sharing the science and good outcomes of our patients with you. Please keep up with my blog and this newsletter for the latest information from Rational Therapeutics.

One Year Later, It's Still
the Right Decision

When Steve Lockwood was diagnosed with cancer he was discouraged. But instead of giving up, he and his wife Joannie started talking to friends, co-workers and physicians. They did their homework and looked at all their options. That's when the decision became clear.

The Diagnosis

In April 2010, Steve was experiencing mild diaphragmatic pain. He began treating it with aspirin, but the pain continued to linger. A month went by without any change, so his physician ordered "a battery of tests," including a CT scan, to determine the cause.

His diagnosis was devastating - Steve had stage IV pancreatic cancer. "Since the outcome of this type of cancer is poor, I was somewhat discouraged," says Steve. "I wanted to know what the timeline might be for survival, so I could get my affairs in order." Sadly, his physician gave him only six months to live.

Seeking Options

Joannie began gathering information and asking people for referrals. Her co-worker recommended Dr. Nagourney. She spoke very highly of him, so they immediately made an appointment. "He was very honest about my case," says Steve. "Dr. Nagourney made no promises, but told me he had success in similar cases."

After exploring a number of other options at highly respected cancer centers in Southern California, Steve and Joannie decided to go with Dr. Nagourney's course of treatment, as it made the most sense to them. "It was nice to be offered some hope and a realistic representation of my chances of survival," says Steve.

Second Chance

It has been one year since the diagnosis and they are enjoying their lives together. "We feel completely blessed for every minute," says Joannie. "In the beginning, it was not a good prognosis, but things did turn around and I'm here today to talk about it," says Steve.

Our Work
Testing PARP Inhibitors

PARP (Poly ADP ribose polymerase) inhibitors have been garnering a lot of attention recently for their benefit to cancer patients. What many people don't know is that our team at Rational Therapeutics has been testing these small molecule inhibitors for a number of years with great success.

Working with targeted therapies is of benefit to both our patients and research colleagues. We look forward to reporting our findings with PARP at the upcoming American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting next month.

In the meantime, learn more about PARP.
