Safety is priority #1 and "Trust" is the theme for the weekend. Knowing who to trust and how to trust are learning experiences on rockclimbing weekends.

Kipp & Meagan Murray 2010
Dear  , Family

The Spring 2010 campout season has come to a close with the new 7th grade Kayaking Instruction Campout at Broken Bow Lake in Oklahoma. Our 6th grade and 8th grade dads and daughters also went to Oklahoma to rockclimb and backpack in the McGee Creek Wilderness.

With the end of school upon us it is time to look toward next years adventures. We have been planning and scheduling  with our vendors and volunteers to get ready for next years schedule, which should be in your mailbox and inbox very soon. We want to make sure you have the dates so you can mark them on your calendars now. With only two campouts a year you do not want to miss one. Our children grow up so fast and then they are gone and we wonder what happened to the time. Make a commitment today to spend some HATS time with your daughter or son so you can keep the lines of communication open for a lifetime.

Over the summer we will be working on plans to spread the word about HATS at your child's school. We want to be at the "Open House Night" next September at your school. In fact, we want you to be there to talk to other parents about your HATS experience! Would you consider doing this? We need your help to spread the word about HATS!

Have you had a HATS experience you would like to share with other dads? Then please do! By referring someone to HATS you are giving them a gift of a lifetime. Refer a friend today!

 Seventh Grade Kayaking Instruction Campout

This years seventh grade dads and daughters experienced a new campout for HATS. In keeping with our instructional campout themes, like our other grades and campouts, this year we changed to an instructional campout for kayaking to help prepare for the eight grade white water kayaking trip in San Marcos. Board Member Gary Hiener and tenth grade daughter Haley designed, created and directed this new campout.
    7th grade kayaking

Dryland instruction was the first item of business from our expert group of kayak instructors hired to to teach us the ins and outs of kayaking. And of course there is always time to smile for the camera.

After the basics were taught we went to the water to practice our new skills.

     water time

Most people have a fear about being able to get out of their white water kayak if it turns over, so that was one of the instruction techniques after lunch. Everyone passed with flying colors.

This weekends theme was about balance. Balance in your kayak as well as balance in your life. During lunch each dad and daughter team created a balancing rock formation. Everyone's formation was different and everyone had a story about the meaning and significance of thier balance sculpture.

This was a great, great campout, and is definitely a keeper. With a new location for the campsite next year this campout will be one more of those very special weekends that dads and daughters talk about for years to come.
