Getting our Bearings

All grades Orienteering and Compass Course

It's Sunday afternoon and it's raining, we must be on a HATS adventure! 30 dads and daughters braved the inclement weather Sunday afternoon March 7 to learn how to use a compass and enjoyed participating in three compass courses.

Before the hats mentors started the instruction course they spent time talking to the dads and daughters about "How to stay found". HATS Founder Kipp Murray explained to the group that he had never been 'lost', but had on many occasions been 'temporarily disoriented'!  Mentor Warren Lewis demonstrated the 10 essentials that you should always have in your day pack in case a 30 minute hike turned into a 24 hour survival experience!

Mentors John and McKenna Biedebach took the dads and daughters through their pacing course and started them on the really fun short orienteering courses.  From there the teams move to the long course designed by Ricardo Chan and ninth grade daughter Jasmine. They were able to successfully navigate the swampy areas and all finished the 500' x 400' long course competition.  Congratulations to all Dads and Daughters for a great afternoon and another lap on your High Adventure Treks for Dads and Daughters journey!

Dear   ,

Greetings everyone! The spring campout season is about to begin. Have you marked your calendar to reserve your campout weekend with your daughter? Be sure to mark it on your calendar now if you have not already done so. It is so easy to just keep doing life as it comes at you and then over commit or even worse forget about commitments to family. You will never be able to regain time missed with your daughter, take the time now and and make the commitment to put a HATS campout as priority #1. I promise you will not regret it!

Would you like to help? Are you a volunteer type of person? We are always looking for mentors and volunteers. Campouts need mentor dads and daughters and if you have special skills or abilities that you think could benefit the HATS experience I would love to talk with you. This newsletter is because a dad said he wanted to contribute something to help HATS. Would you consider giving some of your time to help us grow our organization that helps promote open communication and fosters new bonds between dads and daughters?

Bob Nance joins HATS Board of Directors

Our newest Board Member has been a HATS member and mentor for the past four years.  Bob has two daughters Becca, a ninth grader at J.J. Pearce High School and Emma a 6th grader at Brentfield ElementaryBob, Becca, & Emma.2010, both in the Richardson School District.

Bob has served on the Boards of several Non-Profit organizations over the years and brings a wealth of information to the HATS Board in the areas of marketing and membership. Bob is a real estate investor, he buys, builds, remodels, sells and leases single family homes with his wife, partner and mother of their two girls Heather.

Becca says "I love the special weekends we share together because where else could I be able to just be with my Dad and do the fun things we get to do". With a big sister in the HATS program Emma could not wait to get started with her program so she started a little early by mentoring with her dad. Emma says her favorite thing about the campouts is "getting Dad all to myself for the whole weekend".
HATS Dads and Daughters Brave 17 degree weather

Sixty dads and their 5th through 9th grade daughters braved blowing snow and sub-freezing weather for the January Winter Campout and Great Adventure Race hosted by High Adventure Treks for Dads and Daughters (HATS).David & Adrey Swanson

Tom Harrison, who participated in HATS with his daughter Caroline before she graduated from Lake Highlands High School in 2009, supplied a catered dinner from Back Country Bar-B-Q Saturday night.  "I have been helping with the Saturday night dinner for three years and I have never seen the girls so hungry!" Tom said.  "It's amazing what freezing country air will do to a girl's appetite!"                                 Dave & Audrey Swanson

Skits at Winter CampoutDiana Blom, a junior at Rockwall Heath High and graduate of the HATS program, mentored the dad and daughters with her own dad, David. "We brought hot chocolate for the girls and hot coffee for the dads," David recalled. "My greatest joy, other than being with my daughter, was seeing the look in the dads eyes as they came out of their tents and saw hot coffee and hot chocolate ready for them and their daughters!"  Diana agreed. "The hardest part was breaking the ice off the water to get started!"

"I was hoping for some real winter weather," joked Oak Cliff resident David Sara SpenceDavid Spence, who attended with his 8th grade daughter, Sarah. "The temperature got down to 17 degrees at night. Sarah and I talked all weekend about how things are not always easy in life and your attitude determines how you react to those situations.  We just decided we were going to make the campout fun."

"All the girls slept really warm in their tents," added Allen resident John Biedebach, who participated with McKenna, his 7th grade daughter. "Our mentors showed us how to double bag our sleeping bags and sleep with wool beanies on our heads!"                                  David & Sarah Spence

At the debriefing Sunday morning one of the girls said "My dad was all
warm in his sleeping bag and said we ought to just skip breakfast... I said, "Dad, be a man and go out there and fix me breakfast!  It was really good!"

Sweetheart Banquet

This year's Sweetheart Banquet was a tremendous success considering it happened to coincide with the heaviest snowfall on record in Dallas history. One hundred and twenty dads and beautiful daughters dined and listened to HATS dad and daughter team Joel Allison, CEO of Baylor Health Care System and daughter Celeste, a senior at Lake Highlands High School tell their story of how HATS has impacted their lives.

Alan Allinger was overheard talking to another dad that he knew that even with the snow storm the event would not be cancelled due to weather. The event was held as scheduled at the Royal Oaks Country Club with a covered entrance and complimentary valet parking so the weather really was not an issue.

Board Member and nationally acclaimed photographer Gary Heiner was the photographer at this year's banquet and what great pictures Gary and daughter Hayley where able to capture for all those who attended. All pictures are posted on shutterfly follow the link below to see the great shots of all the dads and daughters.
