Brother Knights,

I must inform you that I will be away from the diocese for up to 6 months on a renewal program, which Bishop Finn has allowed me to participate in addressing some life issues.  Please know that I will keep you in prayer and thoughts as I also ask for your prayers for me.  I look forward to my return to you and this great council.

Fr. Joseph Sharbel

On November 6th we will be exemplifying the First Degree to those candidates that we sign up during October.

Our Service Programs

Service Programs are vital to the success of our council and your contribution is greatly appreciated. As the poster contest and essay contest get underway at our schools I would like to begin planning for the contest judging which will occur between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Evaluation of the submissions is on a 100 point system. If you can provide any help in this area please see or email me. If you are looking for other opportunities to help, our Family Activities coordinator position is vacant.
If you have any questions at all or would like further information, please see me. I can also be reached via email at programs@kofc3414.org.
Thank you,
Gustave E. Bannick

GLADFEST PARADE

The Gladfest Parade is only a few short days away and we still need help.  Each year we hope to increase the size of our entry in order to demonstrate to the Northland our commitment to our Church, Council, Community and to show off our Knights of Columbus Spirit.  Saturday October 6th in the morning (more specifics will be available as we get closer to parade day), we can use you.  We are in need of walkers as well as Fourth Degree Honor Guard.  Hone up your throwing skills as you toss the Tootsie Rolls into the crowd.  We had a handful of gentlemen sign up at our meeting last week, but need many more.  Please mark the date on your calendar and respond to Fred O'Halloran ftohal@gmail.com or 816-415-0947.

Family Activities
WE NEED A FAMILY ACTVIITES CHAIRMAN

Our family activities include such events as the Children's Halloween, Christmas and Easter parties.  For quite some time now our Ladies Auxiliary have planned and run most of these events with some input from the guys.  We need a chairman who can work well with the ladies but also give reports to the council and engender more participation from the men.

Perhaps the chairman will help us discover other projects to help strengthen our Catholic families in the council.

Please let the Grand Knight know if you are interested in learning more.

The Council 3414 Soccer Challenge is history and the second of four programs that we sponsor annually for our youth is fast approaching. The Knights of Columbus Council 3414 Free Throw Championship will be held January 13, 2013 at
2:00pm at St. Pius X High School.

This could be a good membership recruitment opportunity for Council 3414. Some of the fathers attending the Free Throw Championship are likely to be practical Catholics who are eligible to join a Knights of Columbus council. We plan to
have one or two Knights from our Membership Committee set up a table for recruiting. The table will be stocked it with pamphlets and Form 100's to hand out.

We can get a head start on membership recruitment even before the Free Throw Championship. Do you know of a "Basketball Dad" in your neighborhood or work place who you think might become a Knight of Columbus? These are the men who like to make a difference in the lives of other people and like to spend quality time with their children. Make sure you get the phone number of these potential recruits so Council 3414 can perform adequate follow-up procedures.

Brother Knights:

Please prayerfully consider taking part in at least one of the events/ activities listed below at this website:

40 days for life

It is our role as Catholic Gentlemen to be WITNESSES and active participants in the Mission of spreading the message of CHRIST the World!

And the World lies just outside your OWN front door..."Right here in River City!" (Kansas City)

Note: Based on the distribution date of the K of C Newsletter it might be too late to attend the LifeFront Sidewalk Counseling Training as scheduled for Saturday September 22, 2012, but

LifeFront offers training on an on-going basis & is also made available upon request.

Also, based on my own experience with LifeFront, I have found that even if you don't personally feel "comfortable" in the role of a "sidewalk counselor" making direct contact with potential Planned Parenthood potential clients (VICTIMS), LifeFront welcomes your "presence" on the sidewalk as quiet, respectful PRAYER WARRIERS...not noisy,sign-waiving, hate-filled PROTESTERS.

So please consider taking some time to assist LifeFront & to be a WITNESS for your Faith.

I'll be trying to organize a group from this council to go to Planned Parenthood on a regular basis, so if you have any questions or would be interested in joining, please contact me at clemski@gmail.com

The added value of LTC insurance

As life expectancy increases, the number of people in need of long-term care, in their homes or outside facilities, has grown also. Since its addition to the Order's product portfolio in 2000, long-term care (LTC) insurance has provided the Order with an excellent opportunity to further serve Knights and their families. Since 2005, every Knights of Columbus long-term care policy comes with an added value.

That added value is in the form of a service called "Provider Pathway," a program offering access to a network of long-term care providers at discounted rates. The network covers: home health care, personal emergency response systems, adult day care, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities and durable medical equipment.

Eligibility for participation in this program is open to Knights of Columbus long-term care insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent children, parents and parents-in-law. All providers are fully credentialed and meet state licensing requirements.

If you are not currently an LTC policyholder, I suggest that we schedule some time together so that I can provide additional information on how you can avail yourself of this significant, value-added benefit.

Financial Secretary Report
*    Northland Meals on Wheels provide mid-day  meals from North Kansas City Hospital, every week day, to Northland residents who need nutritional support. Several Knights from Council 3414 are drivers.
*    Currently there is a shortage of drivers. Each route consists of up to 12 deliveries. The typical time commitment is about 1-1/2 hours. Most drivers deliver once per week. Some team with other drivers to deliver less frequently. Some drivers team up to have two people deliver together. The driver shortage will become more acute as the snow birds go south for the winter.
*    In addition to delivering food, drivers check the condition of the clients, reporting problems for follow up. For some clients, the driver is the main or only social contact for the day.
*    Brother Knights, please consider taking a route, either individually or forming a team. Call me or Ellen for more details. Joe Griggs 816-452-5376. FS -  Council 3414, Vice-Chairman Northland Meals on Wheels. Ellen Hoyt 816-6919-5322, Executive Director.

A word from the Ladies

We are off to a great start for the fall season with the success of our Steak and Chicken Dinner, we hosted on September 9th.  We would like to thank all the volunteers that helped with the set up and clean up of the hall.  We had rave reviews for the cooks.  Everyone did a terrific job and we really appreciate it. Our next dinner is the October Fest on the 14th.  We are serving German food such as Brats, Red Cabbage, German potato salad, etc.

The price is $10.00 a person with $5.00 for children. Children under five are free.  The time is 5:00 p.m. for Happy Hour and 6:00p.m. for Dinner. We would love to see everyone there.  To RSVP, please call Mary Olshefski at 452-4450.

We are also busy getting the Children's Halloween party ready.  It will be on October 28th and starts at 2:00 p.m. The little spooks and goblins can try their talents at making crafts, eating Nachos and chips with dips, and enjoying a hay ride on the grounds.  They can trick or treat at the Haunted Village.  So, dress in your favorite costume and come have a fun time.  This is a free event with donations from our Ladies' Auxiliary.

As always, we are looking for new members.  If your husband or father is a knight, you can join.  We would love to see you at our meetings, which are held on the third Mondays of each month.  Come and check us out!
