Camera Security

A little noticed addition to the hall is a security camera that was installed recently.

The reason it was installed was to help the rental coordinator check on the progress of rentals and ensure that the depart the premises at the right time.

He can do this anywhere that he has internet access.  It can be used to help our security also.

Grand Knight's Report

Email Grand Knight

The grand knight was at scout camp at press time.  We are sure he would want to remind everyone that all council meetings now will begin at 7:00 PM.  Rosary will be at 6:45 PM.

He also wishes to announce that Fr. Joseph Sharbel the pastor of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish has graciously agreed to be the chaplain for our council.  We are grateful to Fr. Sharbel for accepting this position especially when one considers the many duties that our priests are called upon to perform these days.

Service Programs Update;

Many of our council's service programs operate on a cycle which coincides with the fraternal. As the 2011-2012 fraternal year draws to a close, we look forward to 2012-2013 in hopes of generating new participation from our brother knights while thanking those who worked so diligently last year in support of our communities and our council. Your involvement;

* Provides opportunity for direct involvement;

* Stimulates personal commitment;

* Creates more family participation;

* Strengthens and spreads fraternalism;

* Provides service to Church, community, council, family, culture of life and youth;

* Establishes the council as an influential and important force;

* Elevates the status of programming personnel;

* Develops more meaningful and relevant programs of action;

* Establishes direct areas of responsibility;

* Builds leadership;

* Ensures success of council's programs; and

* Provides recruitment opportunities.

Our service programs are categorized within the following areas;

* Church - Addressing the needs of the Church

* Family - Strengthening family life

* Community - Shaping the world around you

* Council - Entertaining, enjoyable, and beneficial

* Youth - Building leaders for the future

* Columbian Squires

Today's youth, the leaders of tomorrow, are looking for challenges, for responsibility, for faith and trust. The Columbian Squires provides young men with the means and the opportunity to develop in all these areas - to be committed and involved in meeting the challenges of our times. Our adult leaders help mold the youth of today into the influential citizens of tomorrow.

* Youth Groups

Beyond the Squires there are many other ways councils can reach out to young people, such as aiding the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, promoting Scouting, or helping to combat drug and alcohol abuse.

* Scholarships

Numerous scholarships for members and their dependents are sponsored by the Supreme Council.

* Educational Programs

Take part in the Catholic Citizenship essay contest.

* Youth Welfare

Participating in the Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest.

* Religious and Social Activities

Help our young to grow in Faith and five them the opportunity to have fun safely.

Service Programs are vital to the success of our council and your contribution is greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions at all or would like further information, please call me at 816-420-9498. I can also be reached via email at programs@kofc3414.org

Job Opportunity

Fellow Knights, we have a great opportunity for a member of our Council to make some money personally and help the TCA enhance its income. We are looking for a new Rental Coordinator to manage the rental operations of our Hall. A tremendous amount of work has been accomplished over the past 6 months, so consequently the new Coordinator will be able to walk in and hit the ground running.

We are looking of a self starter, someone who enjoys working with people, an individual who is organized and doesn't need constant direction or oversight. Our new coordinator will be working with the three person rental committee of Joe Griggs, Len Kuklenski and Fred O'Halloran. The oversight will be in the form of once a month quick meeting and in time a quarterly meeting.

To make the job easier, we have implemented a new process; there will be a person or persons hired to perform the set up and clean up, this will make the coordinators' job much easier. We have installed a camera in the Hall for the coordinator to monitor the actions of the renters negating the need for the coordinator to go to the Hall at the end of the event. Based on some current and planned actions, we see potentially many more rentals next year. We intend to get into the wedding business. It has been proven that around the Northland a tremendous need for wedding events and we believe we can effectively compete for this business. Dan Bacon has enhanced our Google adverting which is having some impact for us. The job will pay 25% of the net rental income for all events starting with job one. If you have an interest please apply on line at  www.kofc3414.org/rentalcoor.aspx or contact one of the three members of the committee.

Youth Activities
I have four men working with me to produce Council 3414 Youth Activities for the 2012-2013 fraternal year:

Basketball Free Throw Championship - Mike McGowen

Soccer Challenge - Len Kuklenski

Poster Contest - Sandro Medina

Essay Contest - Gustave Bannick

With the new school year fast approaching, our Council 3414 Youth Activities Team will be hard at work. We will be contacting athletic directors and coaches to promote our Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Championship and Soccer Challenge Programs. Our Essay Contest and Substance Abuse Poster Contest Chairmen also will be introducing their Knights of Columbus Programs to schools. Now is the time to ask school administrators about the possibility of having the contest incorporated into their curriculum for the school year.

A Story of Faith

Two members of the council were recently replacing a light bulb for the Marian statue we have outside our hall. Just as they were finishing one of them noticed what looked like a piece of paper stuffed in front of the light fixture. Upon further examination it was shown to be a sealed envelope addressed to "Most Holy Mother Mary".   At one point in time the envelope must have been either rose or fuchsia color but the sun had bleached half of white and the bottom half was dirty but still bore some semblance of the vibrant color it must have once been.

"Should we open it? I mean it's not addressed to us." asked one of the members. They decided that in this case it would be appropriate to do so. Inside was a Mother's Day card which on the front flap said "Strong Woman, Caring Mother, Good Person". In very lovely script the sender had written "Happy Mother's Day, Love, your daughter" And she signed her first name and last initial.

The two members could not bring themselves to throw away this card that from all outward appearances belonged in the trash. There was something special about this card. Perhaps it was the woman's faith that deserved some recognition. Perhaps it was the concept of sending the Virgin Mary a Mother's Day card that kept the item from being discarded. There was something that told these two guys that this act of faith might inspire someone else - kind of a "Pay it Forward" but not with money or deeds but rather with God's grace.

If this true story has caused you to reflect a bit on your faith and our Mother's love for all of us then this Hallmark card has truly lived up to its slogan -" When you care enough to send the very best."

The Urgency of Buying Long Term Care Insurance

There are very few people who do not have a "long term care experience" somewhere in their family - a loved one in a nursing home facility, or a family member being cared for at home because of advancing age, a disability or both. If you have heard of or undergone this situation, you know firsthand the catastrophic effects these events can have on a family, crossing all generations.

What you may not know about is the urgency of taking action. The ability to buy long-term care insurance is based on your health. Putting the decision off, "waiting until next year" or otherwise dragging your feet can be problematic. You never know when your health could change and make you ineligible for coverage. In addition, the required premium commitment increases every year with your age.

When you make the decision to talk about LTC, come right to the Knights of Columbus. In addition to providing life insurance and guaranteed annuities to our members and their families, we also have a very competitive long-term care product. Since entering this market in 2000, nearly 35,000 LTC policies have been sold to K of C members and their wives. While some companies in this line of business have had difficulty (or stopped selling the product altogether), our product continues to perform well with no premium increases on existing policies.

I can help you select the plan that's right for you and meets your budget. I can show you several different options - facility only coverage, home care, a combination of both. Let's talk today.

Tri-County Activities (TCA) Inc
The annual general meeting of the Tri-County Activities Inc.  will be held immediately following the council meeting in July.
This meeting is somewhat akin to a shareholders meeting in a public corporation.  Since all the members of our council are members of the corporation that means you are like a shareholder.  The only difference being you can't sell your shares and retire.  Guess you'll just have to find your fortune someplace else.

One of the most important things that will occur at this meeting is the election of four board members.  The following board members' term of service expires on June 30th.  Joe Robertson, Len Kuklenski, Tim Laird, and Steve Roth.
The remaining board members are as follows:
Ernie Anson, Dan Bacon, Lee Fox, Fred O'halloran,
Ben Volker, Alan King, Paul Bates, Milton Wallace, Mike O Neil, Art Schumacher, Henry Biggs.
