The Missouri Catholic Conference (MCC) is calling on all Knights to attend the Rally for Religious Liberty, which will be held on Tuesday, March 27 in Jefferson City at the State Capitol building.
This rally will protest the recent mandate by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that requires all employers, including the Catholic Church, to provide health coverage for contraceptives, sterilization and abortion drugs.
Missouri is not waiting for Congress to act. Senator John Lamping (R-Clayton) has introduced SB 749, a bill that would place in state law a prohibition on government forcing employers to provide coverage for contraceptives, sterilization or abortion drugs. His bill would also make sure that people don't have to buy a health plan that includes these morally objectionable items.
Archbishop Robert Carlson of St. Louis will join other prominent religious leaders, such as Dr. John L. Yeats, the executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention, in speaking out for rescinding the HHS mandate and passing SB 749.
We need a crowd at least as large as the one we assembled for banning partial birth abortions in 1999. The HHS mandate represents a direct attack on the Catholic Church. We must defend the Church and defend our religious liberties.
I urge each Council to participate in this historic event. If necessary, charter a bus so that more Knights and local parishioners can attend. Registration begins at 10 a.m. There will then be time to visit state legislators. The rally itself will begin at noon in the first floor rotunda of the State Capitol.
For updates on the Rally visit the MCC's website at www.mocatholic.org.
Finally, regardless of whether the Obama Administration partially rescinds the HHS mandate, this rally will go forward! Let's attend this rally and witness to our Catholic Faith.
