Brothers, Regarding the threat to conscience, religious freedom, as well as appreciating one's own healthcare as well as the Catholic hospitals and other aid given to all peoples of our land, two comments noted below will be important for our ongoing reflection: "In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences. To force American citizens to choose between violating their consciences and forgoing their healthcare is literally unconscionable. It is as much an attack on access to health care as on religious freedom. Historically this represents a challenge and a compromise of our religious liberty." - Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, President of the USCCB, 20 January 2012 and "I cannot imagine a more direct and frontal attack on freedom of conscience than this ruling. This decision must be fought against with all the energies the Catholic Community can muster. For me there is no other fundamental issue as important as this one as we enter into the Presidential and Congressional campaigns. Every candidate must be pressed to declare his/her position on all of the fundamental life issues, especially the role of government to determine what conscience decision must be followed: either the person's own moral and conscience decision, or that dictated/enforced by the Federal government. For me the answer is clear: we stand with our moral principles and heritage over the centuries, not what a particular Federal government agency determines." - Cardinal Roger Mahony, on the HHS ruling. Brother Knights, our Council has been extremely busy throughout January, and will continue to be in the coming months. Roses for Life Sunday went well, the KofC Essay Contest concluded, and the upstairs Hall renovation is in its final stage. The KofC Free Throw Contest was a success, with over a dozen Knights lending a hand. Bingo has gone well. Attendance is up slightly, which has increased our charity and council funds. Our first Corporate Communion Mass (8:00 AM) will be at St Gabriel's, January 29th. First Degrees will be held in February, March & April at 7:00 PM, with the General Meeting starting at 8:00 PM.
Take Care and God Bless,
Mike O'Neil

BISHOP'S BLAST
The four Diocesan Bishops in the State of Missouri have written a letter that will be published in each parish bulletin on February 11th-12th. The letter extols the value of the Knights of Columbus in the diocese and invites all Catholic men to consider joining. It also states that the following weekend the K of C will be available to answer questions and help prospective members learn more. We need as many guys as possible to help during the weekend of February 18th and 19th to cover the masses. Please let your round table coordinator know at which mass you can help.
We will have a first degree in February, March and April this spring. We have added the March date due to the Bishop's Blast. A Second and Third Degree exemplification date of MARCH 18th 2012 at Smithville has been set. I will have to check to see if the degree will be at the old parish site or at the new one. All first degree members are encouraged to take the next step into full knighthood in our order. Please let me know if you want more details or are planning to attend.

The Knights of Columbus Council 3414 Free Throw Championship was held on Sunday, January 22, 2012. We had a total of 22 boys and 1 girl at the competition in the St. Pius X High School gym this year. A wide area of our community was represented by families coming in from the Metropolitan Kansas City area.
Posters were visible in libraries, community centers, and middle schools throughout the Northland. Informational flyers were distributed to St. Charles and St. Gabriel School teams by their coaching staff. In addition to the church bulletin announcements, this was the second year we posted information on the internet. The news of our event was also circulated through the North Kansas City School District. Here is the list of winners: | Bracket | 1st Place | Score | | Age 10B | Alex Becker | 13/15 | | Age 11B | Dominick Bonacorso | 10/15 + 5/5 in tie breaker | | Age 12B | Clayton Taylor | 6/15 | | Age 13B | Jake Testerman | 11/15 | | Age 14B | Jaran Brownless | 12/15 | | Age 11G | Katie Taylor | 11/15 |
My thanks to the following Knights of Columbus for assisting with set up, registration, rebounding, and scoring:
Dave Klein
Len Kuklenski
Fred O'Halloran

Darwin Dupree
Larry Grutt

and Chris Sims
Special thanks to Darwin Dupree and Alan King for taking excellent photos and enabling me to post the pictures on the Internet. You can visit my Facebook page or the Council 3414 website to view photos and see all of the excitement that was generated at our Free Throw Championship.
This has been a big success despite the limited amount of organization in our public relations efforts. I will be asking for help from my Brother Knights in Council 3414 to make the 2013 Free Throw Championship an even bigger success.

Brother Knights:
Our council activities slow down some what in the winter months. But we do have some very important things that do happen. First we had the Roses for Life Campaign in all of our parishes. Thanks to all who passed out those roses. Also January has five Sundays, therefore Corporate Communion . Lets show your fellow parishioners that you are a Knight Of Columbus by worshiping together at that Mass. Remember to reserve the Snake Saturday Parade on your calendars. Its another way of showing that the Knights are an active fraternal organization in the Northland. I would like to thank the Volker family for helping Sheila take down the Christmas decorations at the hall I would also like to thank everyone for their prayers for my wife since her surgery for a pacemaker.
I hope you have a very blessed 2012.

Message from Field Agent
Men And Shopping
By nature, most men do not like to shop. At the risk of sounding chauvinistic, that inclination seems more likely to drive our wives, daughters, mothers or other females we know. Sure, there are exceptions. Maybe you enjoy trips to the hardware store for a tool to help on a home improvement project. Maybe you're a collector or you like to shop for cars. Maybe you like to find the best deal on the newest high-tech gadget for your living room.
When you do decide it's time to make a purchase, if you're like me, you want to get the best value for your money. You want the best customer service possible. Sometimes, this requires lots of research and planning. But one of the most important purchases you can make can be put into motion through a simple meeting with me, a brother Knight.
The core product offered by the Knights of Columbus is not glitzy. It's not like a new car or a classic one. It's not like a laptop or a flatscreen television. It's not something you can "show off" to your friends, but you can brag about it. Life insurance is something that everyone needs. If you have some life insurance, the odds are great that you need more. If you don't have any coverage, you should stop to consider all the benefits of a whole life policy. Remember, it's not about you. It's about your family.
When was the last time you shopped for life insurance? If the answer is "a long time ago" or "never," it's time you speak with me. Have you considered your retirement and how you will afford to maintain your current lifestyle? Our annuities can help. Is your income protected in the event of a serious illness or injury? Are you prepared to cover the expensive costs of long-term care should you or your spouse need it? The Knights of Columbus can help provide solutions to these common situations, too.
Please schedule an appointment with me today.
