| Chaplain's Report | |
Recently I saw the following 'quote' and thought it helpful to send the way of reflection of my brother Knights:
To lose your wealth is much.
To lose your health is more.
To lose your soul is such a loss,
that nothing can restore.
Though I've been more absent than present do to the recent Preschool, K and 1st grade school ministry Christmas program, various parish and diocesan meetings, etc., I do wish you and yours a most blessed, happy, holy 2012 of days and nights, Knights.
This new year is a great time for us to refocus our efforts upon "our souls."
As we continue, for example, to pray the new translation of the Roman Missal and the Mass, it is important for us to reflect upon our choices and behaviors, our habits and virtues, our thoughts, words and deeds. Are they leading us closer to or farther away from our Lord and Savior? Wealth and health...are blessings indeed; but attention to the soul is graced for eternity. Have a blessed 2012.... Prayerfully in the service of Christ, Fr Ken Riley

Grand Knight's Report
Grand Knight (email) Brother Knights, thank you for the opportunity to serve you as our council's Grand Knight. Our council has been extremely active over the last few months. As a council, we have participated in activities such as The Gladstone Festival parade and ID booth, annual tootsie roll drive, Memorial Mass, children's and adult Christmas parties and the remodeling of the upstairs of the Hall. Your participation in all of these events is greatly appreciated, and I urge you to take part in our activities throughout the new year of 2012. Remember, to be on the lookout for prospective new Brother Knights to help us to continue to strengthen and grow our council (a new form 100 is currently in use).

Community Activities
Our next big event is the Snake Saturday Parade in North Kansas City. The event is scheduled for the morning of Saturday March 10th so please mark your calendars. We had over 20 participants in the Gladfest this past fall and hope to exceed our participation in March. We are looking for Honor Guard and walkers with or without Tootsie Roll throwing experience of skill. So come join St. Patrick, the Santa Maria and the rest of the gang as we let the people north of the river know who the Knights of Columbus are. Again, please mark your calendars for Saturday March 10th.

 Membership Membership Email
Please ask others to join you in this great organization. When you are at Mass waiting for it to start take a look around you. Are there guys there that you think 'Hey, I wonder why he is not in the Knights?' Well, maybe nobody has ever asked him. Why not go up to him after Mass and introduce yourself and then simply say this. "Has anyone ever asked you to join the Knights of Columbus?" Then wait for his answer. You would be surprised how many guys will be receptive to this. If the fellow starts asking questions that you don't have the answer to simply say this: "I think I am not the best one to answer that question but I know someone who can. Let me get your phone or email and I will have him contact you." Then send me an email with the information and I will be happy to take the ball from there. Remember, MEMBERSHIP IS EVERYONE'S JOB Hope everyone has a joyous new year in 2012. |
Church Activities
Corporate Communion is coming up at the end of January. Mark your calendars for January 29th, 8 AM mass at St. Garbiel the Archangel church. |
 Youth Activities Youth Chair
The Order encourages all councils and assemblies to sponsor the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest at schools in their communities. The essay contest is a creative way to encourage young people to become citizens who are firmly grounded in the Faith. Gus Bannick has been working with the teachers from St. Charles Parish on this year's Essay Contest. The time frame for producing essays has closed and all entries have been picked up. The judges have reviewed all entries and scored them. The 1st and 2nd place winners of U. S. Savings Bonds have been identified and their names provided to Joe Griggs, Council 3414 Financial Secretary. Once Joe makes sure all information on the bonds are complete, our Grand Knight and Gus will discuss how the awards will be presented. All entrants will receive an award certificate. The certificates have been filled out and presented to Mike O'Neil, Grand Knight for his signature. The participating school will be awarded a certificate at a presentation to be announced at a future date. The Essay Contest reporting form that summarizes the event has been completed, signed by our Grand Knight and faxed to the Supreme Council. Gus has contacted Roland Cretel, Jr., our district deputy in order to transfer the completed essay submissions. Roland has the responsibility to forward the winning entries to be judged at the State level of competition. Essays are due to the Supreme Council for international judging by April 15. We hope to have a Kansas City area winner recognized at the state convention. Good luck to all! This has been the first time in several years that Council 3414 has produced an Essay Contest. I'm sure the hard work of Gus Bannick in promoting this event will lead to more of our youth participating next year. You may soon be called upon by one of our Council 3414 Youth Activities Chairmen. They will be asking you to help with a meaningful Knights of Columbus program. If you say, "Yes", you will be helping your council provide today's youth with good wholesome activities. You will also help us, once again attain Star Council status. - Bill Stump

Brother Knights: I would like for all knights of this council to know we have an active Ladies Auxiliary that is open to all wives of Tri-County knights. The auxiliary had two very fun events in December. The organized an adult Christmas party (this is a council activity ), but thanks to a few hard working wives it was a great party. The food was excellent and there were fun games and some door prizes. Then there was a children's Christmas party where each child received a gift from Santa. I would like for you to know that the hardest working lady on these events was Sheila VanKeirsbilck. She bought all the gifts and took calls from the parents who planned to attend with their children. She requested the age and gender of each child that made reservations. She then got a team together to wrap an age appropriate gift for each child. She then got together a team to decorate the hall for the occasions. Her husband used to be a member of 3414 but moved to Holy Family Parish and joined their council. But Sheila decided to stay a member of our ladies auxiliary. She buys most of her supplies (gifts etc.) at after Christmas sales. So if you have the opportunity to meet her, a big thank you and well done would be appropriate.
The auxiliary also hosts a monthly dinner on the second Sunday of each month. Due to the possibility of bas weather there is no dinners scheduled for January and February. Well enough for this news letter. I hope your wives will consider looking into joining the auxiliary. Tom Maschler
Fellow Knights are you and your bride celebrating your 50th or 60th Wedding Anniversary? Supreme Council would like to celebrate this milestone with you by providing a certificate. Contact Ben Volker 816-505-7124 to provide him with your information so we can get the certificate ordered for your special day.

 Pro-Life Report
ProLife Chair Email
Your help is needed on the weekend of January 7th - 8th at your parish. We will be conducting our annual "ROSES FOR LIFE" campaign at that time. This campaign is designed not as a fundraiser but rather we provide paper roses for parishioners to address and sign. We then collect the roses and send them to either Washington DC or Jefferson City. We hope our legislators get the message that there are millions of voters out here who are Pro-Life.
In years past our Pro-Life Chairman was Ed Ludwig and Ed would make the journey to Washington DC for the annual March for Life and he would hand deliver the roses to our representatives. Ed has transferred to the Liberty council where he now is the Deputy Grand Knight. This means we need a Pro-Life Chairman or Chair Couple to take over. Don't worry Ed will still take our roses to DC but we do need someone to be the chair at our council for all of our Pro-Life activities. If you are interested please contact the Grand Knight - Email Grand Knight |

Do you have coverage?
Did you know that about 50% of households in the United States and Canada have no individually owned life insurance? The statistics for why people have not availed themselves of life insurance coverage are pretty clear, and they really don't change from survey to survey. First, let's look at the survey results (provided by the Life Insurance Marketing Research Association in 2010).
Why people don't buy life insurance:
- 74% list "can't afford the coverage" as a major reason they don't buy.
- 52% say a major reason is that they "can't decide what to buy."
- 50% agree it is a good idea but "put it off until tomorrow."
- 43% worry about "making the wrong decision."
Let's examine each of these reasons. First, the vast majority lists a major reason as lack of affordability in the coverage, yet coverage is only offered if it meets your budget. It is in no one's best interest to offer you a product that you cannot afford. A good agent (like me and other Knights of Columbus agents) goes through a process with you of determining what the affordable monthly cost is. For the record, a healthy non-smoking 40-year-old male can get $500,000 of term coverage with the Order for just about $1.50 a day.
If a client can't decide what to buy, I will conduct a needs analysis, which helps identify goals and objectives while considering your budget, at no cost. We offer term insurance, permanent insurance or a mix of both. We believe a combination of these products can solve all personal protection issues.
Putting the purchase of life insurance off can be costly, and I recommend against that. You get older and premiums go up, and you run the very real risk that your health can change. A negative change in your health can cause your costs to increase, or cause you to be denied coverage all together. Delay can be disaster.
For those who worry about "making the wrong decision?" Well, I can help. You can trust me. I know what to look for and what to recommend. A conversation with me can help erase your doubt.

BINGO NEWS
Bad news: Our attendance is not what we would like. (Recently, we've been in the range of 105 - 125, per night.)
GOOD news: However, since our members have promoted the sale of the "event tickets," such as Blazing Balls and Double Gold, we've managed to make almost $36,000 for the Council in 2011!
I want to personally thank all of our Council members who have helped staff our bingo operations at anytime during the year. In particular, I REALLY wish to thank the Night Managers who lead our weekly events. None of our success would be possible without the tireless efforts of these fine gentlemen:
- Red Team: Dave Klein
- White Team: Tom Maschler
- Blue Team: Steve Wiederholt
- Gold Team: Tom Adams
Please let these fine gentlemen know how much you appreciate their efforts when you next see them.
The old adage "Many hands make light work" is true for us as well. We can always use help with bingo. Please call Jim Olshefski, 452-4450, if you can find time in your busy schedule to help JUST ONE FRIDAY NIGHT A MONTH.
Hope you are having a Merry Christmas (10 days left after the date of this writing) and a Happy and Blessed 2012.

Tri-County Activities (TCA) Inc
Brother Knights,
First, I would like to thank everyone who helped get the hall looking new and refreshed. We have the main room done but may need to so some more work once the upstairs is done. In the next month or two, we should be done with the kitchen and upstairs. The kitchen will be completed once the shelves are hung. We will need some volunteers to help installing them. Thanks to Joe R. for getting the shelves for us. We will attempt to get the upstairs painted in January. This should only take 1 day since most of the primer is complete and all we have to do is paint. Once we decide on a day, we will send out a notice for help. We all need to thank Dan B. for starting the process upstairs.
Our last project is to hire a rental coordinator. You all should have received an email pertaining to this new position. I would like to encourage anyone who might be interested in applying to contact someone on the rental committee. We need a dedicated individual to help us with the rental of our hall. Please go to our website to read more and complete an application: Rental Coordiantor Position
Thank you and God bless,
Ernie Anson

It's that time of year for the annual dues to be paid. All members should receive their billing statements very soon. Several members have asked about paying their dues via a credit card or online. We now have the ability to do so. We have a council e-commerce store which among other things allows you the ability to shop for "Dues". We have 5 types of dues that can be paid:
- Annual Dues Plus Donation - This is the most common and will pay your annual dues and contribute to the RIB and Respect Life charities.
- Annual Dues Regular Member - This is the basic dues only without any charitable donation.
- Honorary Member Plus - This is for Honorary Members and includes the charitable donation.
- Honorary Member - This is for Honorary Members without any charitable donations.
- Life Donations - This is for Lifetime Honorary Members who want to donate to the charities.
We use PayPal to process the payments but you do not have to be a member of PayPal if you don't want to be. It will accept credit card payments either way. You will need to give PayPal your contact information that way we can give you the proper credit.
Once I receive the payment I will update your membership status and prepare your membership card. I will have everyone's cards available to be picked up at the council meetings. If you don't pick up your card I will mail it to you.

Greetings from the Ladies Auxiliary
The past several months have been very busy for the Ladies Auxiliary. With a dinner each month, parties for the children at Halloween and Christmas and the adult Christmas party. We adopted a family of five from the Bishop Sullivan Center. The Auxiliary provided the child with toys and clothes. At the adult Christmas party we collected diapers, wipes and clothes for Rachel House. They were most appreciative!
The Auxiliary will be planning the March dinner in honor of St. Patrick in January and February. The details will be published in the next newsletter. We will be working on various items for the State Convention in April. The State Chair Couple are making some changes.
Happy New Year!!
