Hearts of Hope
LMP Lower School students are doing their part to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. All students, PreK through fifth grade, are creating small heart-shaped pins decorated in bright colors. Purchase a HEARTS OF HOPE pin for the donation price of $5 and wear your pin with pride throughout the month of April to let the world know you are doing your part to help those in need. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the THE AMERICAN RED CROSS. All pins will be created this week in art class and will be available on Monday, April 4. To ensure that you receive the pin that your student created, print and complete the form and return it to Mrs. Ledray in the art room by April 8.

"Green for Green" and "Green Tape and Dost" Prove Successful
A report from Sarah Kemeness: On March 17, St. Patrick's Day, the middle and upper school students participated in two fundraisers, raising roughly $900 for the Meritas-wide fundraiser, La Gloria.
While everyone enjoyed donning their favorite green clothing for "Green for Green," the highlight of the afternoon was "Green Tape and Dost," a fundraiser in which the students purchased a piece of green masking tape to stick Math Department Chair Kevin Dost to a wall in the gymnasium. Without fail, it was the middle school students who kick-started this event, buying close to $150 worth of tape for the event. It took almost 250 pieces of tape to stick him to the wall!
La Gloria is a small, poverty stricken town in Mexico. A few years ago, ISR, Meritas's Mexico school, adopted La Gloria with the initial goals being the following:
1. To build and furbish a community center in "La Gloria" that would facilitate the implementation of educational and social responsibility programs. The community center was built and inaugurated last June. 2. To support the implementation of education, health and housing programs, and to promote self-sufficiency in the community of La Gloria.
ISR students started a scholarship program for the young people of La Gloria. Today, the main goal of La Gloria Project is to build change agent leaders who are able to deal with problems caused by exclusion and poverty. Being involved in this project makes these young people realize how education provides an opportunity to transform social lives and offer a good future.
Two years ago, the first scholarship was granted to Vanessa Hernández. She is a nursing student who has one more year to graduate. Her tuition is being completely covered through donations from Meritas families.
This year, there are five candidates for the scholarship program, two middle and three upper schoolers.
We will continue to fund this project, but our goal is to send LMP students and teachers to this town in need.

Lower School
Grades 2 - 5 - ERB Testing April 5-7
Fifth Grade Visits St. Pete Lake Mary Prep's Fifth Grade recently spent the day in St. Petersburg. The first half of the day was spent touring the St. Petersburg Times. In the Times Museum, students saw how early newspapers were printed using letter blocks that had to be set by hand and "pressed" onto paper. We still use "the Press" to mean news reporters today! Students visited the newsroom, editorial writers, artists, and photographers. We learned from Becky Bowers, a Times editor, that newspapers support democracy by providing information to the public about the community, country, and world. "The more information voters have, the better able they are to make well informed decisions in the voting booths!" Later in the afternoon, students visited the St. Petersburg Holocaust Museum where they learned more about the unjust treatment of people during World War II. We learned about many people like Mr. Schindler and Mr. Sukahara who became helpers and protectors. We were challenged by their stories to stand up for others and become an "Up-Stander" in our time.
March 28 - April 29, 2011 VisionWalk wrist bands on sale for $1.00 each from either the Lower School or Upper School front desk. Info - Mrs. Suris 407.718.3506.

College Visit Trip
An exciting opportunity for rising juniors and seniors! On June 5 LMP, in conjunction with Windermere Prep, is offering a college visit trip to eight colleges/universities over the course of five days. This trip will allow students to get a feel for schools of varying sizes, both private and public, in a number of states. If an adequate number of students participate, (35-40 with four chaperones), students will fly one-way to Richmond, VA where they will board a 56-passenger luxury coach bus that will transport students to visit the campuses of the University of Richmond, University of Virginia, Elon University, Duke University, Davidson College, Furman University, Clemson University, and Emory University. Students will return to LMP early in the evening of Friday, June 10. The total cost for the trip is $750, based on at least 35 students and includes the plane fare, five nights hotel accommodations with breakfast, and the luxury coach. Email gregg.prigerson@lakemaryprep.com by Friday, April 8, simply saying, "yes for the trip." Payment will be due by check made out to LMP by Friday, April 15, 2011. Click here for the flyer with details.
