LMP RIBBON CUTTING BOOSTS COMMUNITY

RIBBON CUTTINGOn October 15, the Central Florida community added a new dimension to its private education landscape when the ribbon was officially cut on the new Residential Life facilities at Lake Mary Prep. Research indicates that the program is the first in Seminole County, and only the second in the entire four-county area (Orange, Seminole, Lake and Volusia).
The event was well attended by parents, students, and faculty, and had a number of local dignitaries on hand including Lake Mary mayor, David Mealor, representatives of the area's Chamber of Commerce, and Lake Mary law enforcement.
After a few brief words from the Mayor and LMP headmaster, Dr. Spencer Taintor, the ribbon was easily dispatched with a bit of help from a special guest. According to Residential Life Program director, Pam Whitney, "One of last year's original [residential program] students who will be among those in the program's inaugural international graduating class, Kevin Fei Ren, helped Mayor Mealor cut the ribbon!"

LMP STUDENTS EARN AP® SCHOLAR HONORS

An excerpt from The College Board news release:
COLLEGE BOARD

Seven students at Lake Mary Preparatory School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the nearly 1.7 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students' performance on AP Exams.

At Lake Mary Preparatory School:
One student qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. This student is Troy Ferrell.
Two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are Troy Ferrell and Scheherazade Kahn

Five students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Allison Chambers, Ashkan Towhidnejad, Amanda Dudley, David Savrda, and Elliott Yen.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
AN EVENING IN VIENNA
An Experience to be Treasured

An Evening in Vienna is a major component in the 7th grade Language Arts curriculum. Students will meet with me to choose a 19th century European royal to study, research, and become for our special event on March 25, 2010. The program begins with the choice of royal. From there we will go to the computer lab where students can look on various websites to ponder pictures of their royals and get an overall sense of them, their place in history and best of all, their connection to other royals in the class.
Our class will learn the art of formal letter writing and will craft a letter to a descendant of their royal. Sometimes this requires the purchase of an overseas stamp, as many descendants still live in Europe, although not all. It is especially exciting when students receive their own personal letters to keep as a memento. These letters are copied and presented the night of the ball.
We will be coordinating costume fittings with Century Costumes in Orlando sometime in the next month. You will be alerted through email from our committee on the time for your child's fitting.
Starting in January students will learn MLA format in class, along with finessing a research paper complete with in-text citations and works cited page. Because we will do the majority of the work in class, I will be there to help your child through the different crafting stages. We proceed in small increments so it is not overwhelming to your child and they learn that when large things are broken down into small parts, that they can find success, building confidence in themselves and their abilities. Additionally, we will offer etiquette lessons to your children so they may learn the art of fine dining and manners which they will find to be life lessons. We will take a field trip to experience an English high tea and enjoy learning how to ballroom dance. The night of the ball will find your student basking in the glow of a job well done. It is empowering to them to see the outcome of their hard work, perseverance, and skill as they gather with family and friends for this momentous night.
As you can imagine, it will cost a great deal of money to put this extraordinary event together. Our goal is to defray the cost to parents as much as possible, thus we are hosting fund raising events throughout the year. Any gifts toward this end are much appreciated.
Our first fund raiser will be the sale of cheesecakes and the forms will be coming home with your child. Please watch edline for dates of meetings as everyone's help in ensuring success for the program is needed.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email or call me.

Warm regards,
Betsy Hertenstein, MS

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

MEET THE DIRECTOR, PAM WHITNEY
Lake Mary Prep started the Residential Life program last January with five boys in dorms. It has grown to 12 boys and nine girls boarding this year, with 3 student living with host families. These students are from all over the world and add a great blend to our student population.

INTL 09

Students from the inaugural semester of the LMP Residential Life program, taken in January 2009.
(L to R: Kevin, Mina, Ken, Terry, Walker, Liz, and Young.)

This summer we hosted a three week summer ESOL program for the three Meritas Florida schools, North Broward, Windermere, and Lake Mary. We had 12 students attend and scheduled many wonderful outings outside of their intense class schedule. As for being the director of the program, it's very exciting. I handle all of the residential issues including catering, transportation, entertainment, house masters - everything it takes to run the dorms! I look forward to sharing with you the many wonderful things happening in this terrific program as the year progresses.

FROM THE BOYS DORM
Hello! My husband, Steven, and I are house parents for the boys in the LMP Residential Life Program. What a great group! Five of the boys were here last year and stayed with Sue and Bill, who are now the house parents for the girls. They told me in advance how special these boys are, and they were right. We have 11 from China and one from Korea. They traveled alone for 22 hours just to get to us, and some of them are in the United States for the first time.
Their interests are many: art, keyboard playing, singing, shooting pool, playing ping pong and the favorite of all time, basketball. The boys generally come home from school, eat a snack (usually noodles), and then it's outside for a little basketball before studying. Personalities are as varied as their interests: three of the boys exhibit well-developed senses of humor, two are passionately inquisitive, one is a Star Wars fan, another sees the humor in almost everything, and all dozen of them crave knowledge.

They are helpful to each other and care about each other.  You can't help but love them!!!

FROM THE GIRLS DORM
I'm Sue. My husband Bill and I are house parents of the International Girl's Dorm for Lake Mary Prep.
Our girls are from Guangzhou, Beijing, Dalian, Nanjing and Shanghai, China, and we also have a student from Bamberg, Germany and another from Goyang, Korea.
The girls have different talents and are a delight to work with. Some play ping pong, while others enjoy basketball, musical instruments, and singing. Nearly all like to shop and try American foods.
They are very focused on getting good grades so they can prepare for their future. My husband and I admire all the International Students who travel thousands of miles away from home to study in the USA... we have grown so attached to them all, and it is such a privilege to be a part of their lives!

HOMECOMING WEEK & THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

School spirit was everywhere on campus in October as Lake Mary Prep celebrated its 10th anniversary as well as Homecoming Week. Here are a few of the scenes you might have happened upon:

Lower School competed in an afternoon of field games followed by an ice cream social. The students also had a blast at their pep rally, then planted a time capsule for future Griffins.

Other Homecoming events included a Powder Puff football game on Thursday, October 22, in which students from the Junior and Senior classes were pitted against Freshmen and Sophomores. The combined Juniors/Seniors beat the Freshman/Sophomore team, 14 to 0.

Friday was the Homecoming Pep Rally and Football game.  Tailgating before the football game took place between 5pm and 6pm with past and present faculty and alumni. The Homecoming football game opening ceremony, celebrating our past faculty and students, began at 5:30pm with Dr. Taintor recognizing each individual. The week capped with the Homecoming Dance, A Night in Miami, on Saturday evening.
