How Many Business Owners Actually Sell Their Businesses?
Quick Links

Greetings!

I'm going to answer the question in the message line in just a minute. But, I want to start by saying thanks to everyone who took time to complete our survey in the last newsletter.  We had a lot of great responses and got valuable feedback.  We're putting the information to use now by changing a couple of internal systems.

The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind tour of local entrepreneurial events.

Here is a picture of the Entrepreneurship Law Firm table at the Entrepreneur Fair on August 26th at the downtown Orlando Sheraton.  The turn out was huge - I heard more than 700 people attended!  We had a great time visiting with everyone.  If you didn't get a chance to come down, be sure not to miss it next year.

Continuing with our early fall events, I'll be speaking this Thursday at the Small Business Development Center 'BOSS' event in Lake County.  Next week, I'll be speaking again for the SBDC at the Disney Entrepreneur Center (September 15th at 6pm) on Business Killing Legal Mistakes.

Now, the answer to the question - 11.69%.  That's right, of just under 72,500 businesses listed for sale in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (i.e., boom times) through Business Brokers of Florida members, a bit less than 8,500 actually sold!

Most business owners look forward to the day when they can sell their businesses and realize the wealth created through all of that hard work.  But the data suggests that only about 12% of closely held business owners actually achieve that goal.

Is your business in the top 12% of all closely held businesses? (Remember: To Thine Own Self Be True.)

If you're not entirely sure about your business, I'd be happy to talk to you about the process of exit planning - making your business into a salable asset.  Give me a call.

As always we appreciate your referrals and we'll take great care of them.
