Thanksgiving is over and December is here. Winter is just around the corner, bringing the season of celebration.
The month of December was named after the 10th month in the Roman calendar. (In Latin, decem means "ten".) The Roman goddess Decima was one of the three Fates. She personified the present.
Winter is traditionally a time of reflection and renewal. Our distant ancestors used it as a time to repair their tools and to tell family stories. For the Hopi, it is Soyal, the season when the kachinas return. For the Navajo, it is the Season When Snakes Sleep; also a time to tell ancestral stories. For us, this is a time to celebrate with family, reflect on the year that is coming to a close, make plans for a new year.
The major festival of December is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year and the official beginning of the winter season. As a legacy of our pagan past, the solstice is also called Yule, Alban Anthuam and Midwinter. Originally celebrated on December 25, it was the birthday of many solar saviors and dying gods. These saviors included Osiris, Syrian Baal, Attis, Adonis, Helios, Apollo, Dionysus, Mithras, Jesus, Baldur, and Frey.
In modern American, the festival of Christmas is a wonderful blend of many religious traditions, ancient and modern, Pagan, Zoroastrian, Jewish, Mithraic and Christian.
December's flowers are narcissus, holly, poinsettia and mistletoe. The birthstones are turquoise, lapis lazuli, zircon, blue topaz and tanzanite. Sincerely, Tim Johnson & Justin Swanstrom

DECEMBER ASTROLOGICAL UPDATE

No matter what the situation, the answer is always gratitude.
Happy Holidays Everyone! Wow, where did the time go? This year has been quite a ride. In gratitude, I appreciate every one of you. Thank you for your love, your wisdom and your continued support of these astrological updates throughout this past year.
On November 22nd the Sun moves out of Scorpio into the optimistic, freedom-loving sign of Sagittarius. The third of the fire triplicities, Sagittarius symbolizes the fire of wisdom and understanding, offering faith and vision to accomplish the impossible. Jupiter, the planetary ruler of Sagittarius, is the largest planet in our solar system. Perhaps that is why this expansive planet is geared to do things on a large scale. The downside however, implies that ideals can become too lofty, with an exaggerated tendency to overdo. We can keep this in mind as we experience the holiday season.

As the recession wears on, some rather counter-intuitive trends have emerged. One would think that decreased economic activity would result in a decrease in American's health for the average person.
That turns out to be false! According to John de Graaf of the Solutions Journal, the average American's health has actually improved overall during the recession. Yes, it's true that on the whole, people are working less and earning less, but they're also driving less, smoking less, and eating less bad restaurant food. In addition, they're spending more time with family & friends, exercising more, sleeping more, and gardening more. These healthy choices are decreasing the mortality rate. In fact, for every percentage point increase in unemployment, mortality decreases by about a half a percent. The largest improvements has been a big dip in traffic deaths, which has declined by 25%, and an increase in gardening, up 40%. Such a great silver lining!
