The Library System will be closed Friday, Dec. 30, Saturday, Dec. 31, Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, and Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, for the New Year's holiday. Computer Labs will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 4, and some services will be limited that day because of a computer system upgrade. The Library System will be closed Monday, Jan. 16, for Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday.

Visions of the Universe exhibit opens; Programs continue

Ron Shaneyfelt explains the history of telescopes on Nov. 29 at Grissom Library.

NASA speaker and astronomy teacher Ron Shaneyfelt shared information, images, artifacts and giveaways with an audience of more than 55 as part of Grissom Library's opening of "Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery" on Nov. 29. The opening also included the opportunity to view the night sky through a telescope and the unveiling of a new exhibit about astronaut Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom.

 The "Visions of the Universe" traveling exhibit will be at Grissom Library through Feb. 15 The Library also is offering these free programs in January, in conjunction with the exhibit:

 

Jan. 12, Astronomy Night: Children and teens ages 5-14 can view the night sky through telescopes and participate in telescope demonstrations, crafts and activities and more, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, at Grissom Library. Register now. 

 

Jan. 28, Explore the Universe Game Day: NASA educators will conduct a variety of games that will help youth from kindergarten through eighth grade explore the universe with images from the Hubble telescope, 1-4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, at Grissom Library. Galileo may appear, too. No registration required.

Devon Crape and McKenzie Johnson were winners in the Grissom Library's Teen Poetry Slam on Nov. 19. Teens performed original poetry and their favorite poems in a coffee-house-style poetry slam at the Library. Winners were chosen by people's choice.

Teens and children

Battle of the Books competitionJan. 17-Feb. 23: Battle of the Books Practice Sessions: The Library System plans and coordinates the annual Battle of the Books program for schools in Newport News. The competition provides a way for students to have fun with books, while encouraging reading and promoting reading comprehension. Practice sessions familiarize students with the conditions of the battles, acquaint them with the buzzer board, and familiarize them with the format of the questions. The practice sessions are 3:15 to 4:15 for middle schools and 4:30 to 5:30 for elementary schools on these dates and locations: Jan. 17, 24, 31; Feb. 7, 14, 21 at Main Street Library; Jan. 18, 25; Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22 at Grissom Library; and Jan. 19, 26; Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23 at Pearl Bailey Library.

Logo for Civil War discussions

Jan. 12-March 8, Let's Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War: Dr. Phillip Hamilton, associate professor of history at Christopher Newport University, will lead a series of book discussions for adults on the Civil War, 6:30-8:30 p.m., every other Thursday, excluding holidays, beginning Jan. 12, at Main Street Library. Book discussion dates are Jan. 12, 26; Feb. 9; March 1 and March 8. Read more. Register now

 

Holiday cards

Jan. 14, Making Crafts from your Holiday Cards: Instructor Ruthann Grabowski will teach adults how to make various crafts from recycled holiday cards, 2-4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, at Virgil I. Grissom Library. Participants should bring five to 10 holiday cards, and all other supplies will be provided. Register now.
