The Library System will be CLOSED Friday, Nov. 11, for Veterans' Day. It also will be CLOSED Thursday, Nov. 24, and Friday, Nov. 25, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Can Your Fines!

Donations of food and personal items take the place of overdue fines Nov. 26 to Dec. 29 at all Newport News Public Libraries.Each nonperishable, nonexpired food item and personal item is donated to the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula.
This does not apply to lost or damaged materials or to fees charged once an account has been sent to the collection agency.

| Craft Sale Dec. 3 |  |
You can purchase locally handmade craft items and help Grissom Library, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, at Grissom Library. Items for sale include hats, scarves, bookmarks, afghans, slippers, Christmas ornaments, baby items, dishcloths and more. All items are knit, crochet and counted cross-stitch made by members of the Library's Loosely Knit Group.

Astronomy exhibit, special programs coming to Grissom

A new traveling exhibit about the universe will be at Grissom Library, Nov. 29-Feb. 15. The exhibit uses dramatic imagery from Galileo's observations to the Hubble Space Telescope and other space missions to show how our understanding of the universe has changed over the past 400 years. Grissom Library will offer free programs and events in connection with the exhibit, including a special opening ceremony with refreshments provided by the Friends of the Newport News Public Library, 7 p.m., Nov. 29, at Grissom Library.

More than 245 meet author Catherine Coulter

Her characters sometimes name themselves, tell her what to write and notify her when a plot twist just isn't working. So said Catherine Coulter, No. 1 New York Times bestselling author, speaking on Oct. 27 at Christopher Newport University's Ferguson Center for the Arts. The author talk and book signing was presented free to the public by the Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium. Read more about this event in the December "Books & Beyond."

Romance novelists visit Libraries

Two national best-selling romance novelists presented author talks, book-signings and a writing workshop in September. Rochelle Alers presented an author talk, question-and-answer session and book-signing on Sept. 17 at Grissom and Pearl Bailey Libraries. Kristan Higgins conducted a romance writers' workshop and book-signing Sept. 24, at Main Street Library.

Library System helps organize Mayors' Book Club
|  Preschoolers in Newport News are getting new books and more people to read to them through the new Hampton-Newport News Mayors' Book Club. In Newport News, the program provides volunteer readers and new books to preschool students. The Library System is helping to coordinate the new joint program as well as recruiting volunteers who will read a book each month to students in preschool classrooms. Read more |

Teens decorated cupcakes, made smoothies and won prizes in October as the Library System celebrated Teen Read Week, Oct. 16-22. And Halloween at the Libraries brought trick-or-treating, ghost hunting, storytimes, movies, scavenger hunts and more.

Nov. 12, National Gaming Day @ Grissom Library: Kids and teens ages 8-18 can enjoy an afternoon of gaming fun, 4-5:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12, at Grissom Library. Battle on the Wii, enjoy board games, bring your own Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Magic: The Gathering cards to challenge other players. No registration required.
Nov. 19, Teen Poetry Slam: Teens ages 12-18 are invited to perform their own original poetry or their favorite poem in a coffee-house-style poetry slam, 4-5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19, at Grissom Library. Winners will be chosen by people's choice for "Best Original Poem" and "Best Performance." Register beginning Nov. 5.
