Registered Library cardholders in good standing can download three songs a week in the MP3 format at no cost from the Library's website and computer labs. These songs become a permanent part of the users' personal library. They do not expire or need to be returned. Contact the reference desk at any Newport News Public Library for help. | Free tickets available for Catherine Coulter |  |
Beginning Sept. 27, all of the Newport News Public Libraries will have free tickets available for the Author Talk and Book-Signing by No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Catherine Coulter. Coulter will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, at Christopher Newport University's Ferguson Center for the Arts. Tickets will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis and limited to two per person while supplies last. Presented by the Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium.

Libraries affected by Hurricane Irene
| Main Street Library: Main Street Library is closed Tuesday, Aug. 30, because of a continued lack of power due to Hurricane Irene. The School Bus Safety program that was scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 30, has been canceled.
Bookmobile: The Library System's Bookmobile is not making its regular stops because some streets remain blocked. The Bookmobile will be parked in front of Main Street Library on Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and open for users to check out and return Library materials. Grissom Library: Power has been restored at Grissom Library, and it will be open for normal business hours on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The Teen Fashion Show scheduled for 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, and the School Bus Safety program scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, both will be held as planned. Library System: Newport News Public Libraries closed at noon on Friday, Aug. 26, and remain closed Saturday, Aug. 27, and Sunday, Aug. 28, because of Hurricane Irene. The Libraries experienced only minor damage from leaks. Fines were waived for materials that were due during the time that the entire Library System was closed because of the Hurricane. The Library System celebrates romance novels, Sept. 17-24, with visits from two national best-selling romance novelists. Rochelle Alers will present an author talk, question-and-answer session and book-signing, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Sept. 17, at Virgil I. Grissom Library; and 1-2:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, at Pearl Bailey Library. Kristan Higgins will conduct a romance writers' workshop and book-signing, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, at Main Street Library. No registration required. Sept. 10, Saturday Matinee: Children and families are invited to a free showing of the movie "Rango," 2-4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, at Grissom Library. No registration is required.
Sept. 22, Big Brothers Big Sisters Male Mentoring Program with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity: Big Brothers Big Sisters and Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., in conjunction with Pearl Bailey Library, will host a Male Mentoring Program for boys and young men ages 9-18 the fourth Thursday of each month, excluding holidays, at 4:30 p.m. The first sessions begin 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22, at Pearl Bailey Library. The program empowers youth to aspire toward higher education through self-creation, avoidance of risk- taking behaviors, and participation in positive, esteem-building activities. Register beginning Aug. 29.

Sept. 26, Grant Writing Workshop: Adults can get grant-writing tips and recommendations of sources, 5-8 p.m., Monday, Sept. 26, at Grissom Library. Workshops will be conducted by Dr. Jean Filetti, associate professor and writing instructor at Christopher Newport University. Register beginning Sept. 10.
