80th anniversary celebrated |
The Newport News Public Library System celebrated the 80th anniversary of the opening of West Avenue Library -- its first Library -- with a presentation, display and refreshments Oct. 14 and Oct. 17. At right, Library patron Karen Miller views the display of historic photos and documents at the anniversary celebration. West Avenue Library opened on Oct. 14, 1929, and continues to provide full library services in downtown Newport News. In 2007, it was designated as a historical landmark because of its Georgian Revival architecture and its role in the desegregation of Newport News, and it was featured in the first coffee table book on Libraries, "Heart of the Community: The Libraries We Love," as the only Library in Virginia to be featured. Watch Newport News TV's special video segment on the history of West Avenue Library as it celebrates its 80th anniversary. |

Almost 500 hear author David Baldacci |
He writes about global markets, the expertise of special ops teams, clandestine intelligence, espionage. He wants his readers to be entertained, but also to learn something about a world they know nothing about -- and he wants to "mess" with them. "Once I get a reader out of his comfort level, and he doesn't know what's going on -- then I've got him," David Baldacci told an audience of almost 500 on Oct. 15 at Thomas Nelson Community College's Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium in Hampton. Baldacci, a Virginia native, is the author of 17 bestselling novels, as well as short stories and original screenplays. His 18th novel,"True Blue," was released on Oct. 27. His author talk and book-signing was presented free to the public by the Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium with support from various local organizations, including the Friends of the Newport News Public Library. |
