NTD NEWS
June 2, 2010
A lot of this NTD News covers events that were announced in previous weeks. But the reality is that one, or even two announcements, are bound to miss some people. Plus, even if most readers take note of the news items, a reminder doesn't hurt. The events we present here are important to the people involved, the committees, the sponsors, the candidates, so we'll almost always mention them more than once.
This Saturday's canvass for "first time voters" is certainly news that deserves repeating. If you have even one or two hours free on Saturday, you can do something to help keep Democratic Party control of the U.S. House and Senate. Remember, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner are two of the obstructionists you'll be helping to stifle.
The ongoing list of fundraisers may seem especially repetitious but we all know that, unfortunately, without good funding, even the best candidates are at a big disadvantage. The Cubs Rooftop Party is another event we must keep mentioning because the funds it raises will help the New Trier Dems all year. A new news item this week is the Bottle Shop Candidate Meet in Wilmette on June 17. It's a great new initiative from the NTD Membership Committee so plan now to be there. And this NTD News also invites you to visit Mark Kirk's office next Monday afternoon at 5pm. When you read the article you'll see why he deserves a visit.

This Saturday - June 5 -- Spend a few hours re-contacting "First Time Voters" -- It's the first big step toward victory in November.
|
The New Trier Democrats Politial Action Committee urges everyone receiving this NTD News email to devote some time on Saturday June 5 to launch a critically important project.
NTD members will be joining members of the Democratic Party of Evanston and Organizing for America on June 5 to participate in an exciting national event: Advancing Change/Vote 2010.
We'll be reaching out to those first-time voters, because this November they can deliver the margin of victory for Democrats in the 10th District -- and even the entire state. Lt. Gov. candidate Sheila Simon will be with us, along with other Democratic candidates and elected officials. But for this effort to succeed, we need you there. To sign up click here.
Canvassing begins at 10:30 a.m.; another shift begins at 1 p.m. Meet at the DPOE office in Evanston --- 821 Chicago Avenue.
We'll also have phone banking going on for those who can't join the canvassers.
Teams will be sent out to engage with first time voters in the 9th and 10th Congressional Districts. We want these potential voters to understand how important it is for President Obama to gain and retain Democratic voices in the U.S. House and Senate. Next Monday, June 7 at 5pm show Mark Kirk what you think of this case history of his arrogance toward constituents.
|
Peggy Slater, New Trier Democrat, NTD Political Action Chair and member of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, sent this personal message to the NTD News:
On Monday, June 7 from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, we will be gathering by Mark Kirk's 10th District office, 707 Skokie Blvd. in Northbrook, for a 5:30 press conference. We want to make it clear that the people are fed up with Mark Kirk.
This protest against Mark Kirk is organized by a group that came together to work toward comprehensive immigration reform. We are a diverse group - Latinos and Koreans, Protestants and Catholics, Muslims and Jews. We represent thousands of Congressman Kirk's constituents, many of whom have suffered for years from the inequities of our broken immigration system - separation from their families, low wages, living in the shadows. We have repeatedly requested to meet with Congressman Kirk, using every way possible: we've called hundreds of times, written over a thousand letters, visited his Washington office twice, held five vigils at his Northbrook office. The series of office vigils ended when he finally gave us an appointment, only to cancel it and not reschedule. -- He gave the same rude treatment to a group of North Shore rabbis; scheduling an appointment to meet regarding immigration reform and then canceling at the last minute and failing to respond to requests to reschedule.
Every effort to speak with our Congressman on any aspect of immigration reform other than border control has resulted in disregard and disdain from Mark Kirk. This is an insult to all constituents. If you don't come with a big check or a big stick don't bother to knock on Rep. Kirk's door. Please join us to let Kirk know that a Congressman who insults his constituents has no chance to become their Senator.* |
