NTDO NEWS
March 24, 2010
This week America's system of health care took a giant step toward becoming a system that makes quality health care truly available to every American. But although it would seem a good thing for a system to ensure none of us goes without needed medical care because of our finances or a pre-existing condition, some of our fellow Americans don't think so. Most of these health care reform opponents state their opposition in terms of economic or political philosophies but the Republican Party's strategy for resisting these reforms plays off emotions that are much simpler and more toxic than something as clean as philosophical differences. Bob Herbert summed this up perfectly in a New York Times op ed this week. If you didn't see it, click through and read it now (and then please come back for our news). Mr. Herbert's take on the Republican Party's "lack of class" sums up why a lot of us choose to support the efforts of the Democratic Party. Basically, it's not about a philosophy, it's simply about acting decently toward our fellow human beings.
This week's NTDO News has no announcements of events dealing with health care. But in a larger sense, every time we announce an event for a good Democratic candidate, or a community forum for thoughtful and civil discussion, or an opportunity for a grassroots volunteer activity, we are weakening the increasingly mean-spirited and negative strategy of the Republican Party -- a strategy based on misinformation, ignorance and fear.

Is Illinois' budget crisis affecting our future economic development? You can learn a lot about where we're headed on March 30.
|
The Center for Tax and
Budget Accountability's 9th Annual Fiscal Symposium will discuss the economic effects of Illinois' fiscal
policies. The recurring and substantial budget shortfalls are causing devastating cuts to vital public services like education
and social services. These and other public services play a significant
role in equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary
to become economically productive, and in creating an economic
environment in which good paying, good-benefit jobs are obtainable.
You are invited to join the symposium panelists for a lively discussion on the interplay between
adequately funding basic services and economic development.

Legislative Redistricting in Illinois is more complicated than you might think. David Hoffman will tell you how much more on April 8.
|
Last year, Governor Quinn's
Illinois Reform Commission recommended substantially reforming the
state's redistricting process. The League of Women Voters and the
Illinois Campaign for Political Reform (ICPR) responded by joining with
other reform groups to draft a proposed amendment to the Illinois
Constitution that is designed to reduce the role of politics in
deciding where the boundaries should be for state legislative
districts.
Legislative Redistricting,
