NTDO NEWS
February 17, 2010

What's next? The Primary Election is past. The Democratic candidates are refining their campaigns for the battles they'll face leading up to November. Our candidates are smart, articulate and support progressive values. Their Republican opponents, with virtually no exceptions, will be claiming that the only way to move forward is to turn backward.

So what can we do to help make sure the Republican strategy of negative energy and self-centered solutions fails their candidates in November?  First, we can all decide to do everything we can to support the Democratic candidates we've chosen. Between now and Election Day, any time or financial support you can give to any of the campaigns will make a critical difference.
-
Volunteer. The New Trier Dems will be focusing on a fall victory with plenty of ways to get involved. In the coming months NTDO News (and the NT Dems website - click on the "Get Involved" drop-down) will be highlighting these volunteer opportunities.
-
Financial help is the lifeblood of every campaign and always welcome. So throughout this election year, this eNewsletter will be letting you know about key candidate fund-raisers.
-
Know your candidates' positions. Get to know where your candidates stand on the issues and how they plan to deal with them. Visit their websites. The NTDO News will also be presenting their positions.
-
Know your candidates' opponents. Understanding the true positions of Republican Party candidates will not only make us better informed in political conversations, it should give us plenty of motivation to make sure they don't get elected! With that in mind, this issue of the NTDO News is reprinting an interview with Bob Dold, Republican nominee for U.S. Congress in the 10th District, that was conducted last October by Jeff Berkowitz. The views of Mr. Dold last fall are one more incentive to help Dan Seals win the 10th District's congressional seat.

BobDoldGetting to know the opposition:
The 10th is Pro-Choice.
Bob Dold -- Not So Much.

The Republican candidate for Congress from the 10th  Bob Dold is often said to be pro-choice. We wanted to learn Dold's views, so we checked his web site, which lists several issues but never mentioned a woman's right to choose.  So we googled and found an interview with Jeff Berkowitz in which Berkowitz tried to pin Dold down on the issue.  Below is an excerpt from that interview.  You can read the entire interview on Jeff's website:  jeffberkowitz.blogspot.com

Pro-life or Pro-choice

Jeff Berkowitz: On the cultural issues, would you describe yourself as pro-life or pro-choice?

Bob Dold [Kenilworth resident and now the 10th Cong. Dist. Republican Candidate]: I would consider myself to be somewhat in the middle, which I know is not the answer that you're looking for there, but I'm against partial birth abortion; I am against federal funding [for abortions] and I am for parental notification.

Overturn Roe v. Wade?

Jeff Berkowitz: Okay, but you would not like to see Roe v. Wade overturned?

Bob Dold: I think, right now, the way it works with the Supreme Court is that Roe v. Wade is precedent at this stage of the game and it would be tough to do so. So, I just don't think that is realistic at this stage.

Jeff Berkowitz: Philosophically, I know you can't control it as a House member, but to the extent you could, would you like to see Roe v. Wade overturned, just ... in terms of your philosophy.

Bob Dold: Philosophically, I think it's kind of a moot point. I go back to what I am saying in terms of -- I'm against partial birth abortion; I am against federal funding; I am for parental notification. Those are the issues that I have an effect on or will be able to vote on with regard to Congress.

A ban on partial birth abortions, without an exception for the health of the mother:

Jeff Berkowitz: ...you know there was a ban, in Congress, that was passed, that bans partial birth abortion-and doesn't allow an exception for the health of the mother. If you were there, would you have voted to support that ban on partial birth abortion?

Bob Dold: I...again, Jeff, without having taken a look at the bill, and it is not trying to sidestep it. I really need to take a look at the bill, obviously the health of the mother is important -- I'm not for -- Again, I'm against partial birth abortions, so, those are, that's kind of a tough one without taking a look at the bill. That's kind of like asking you to vote on something that you haven't taken -- or read through, which I think is a problem in Congress today. I don't think congressional leaders are actually reading what they are passing. That's a big, big problem
