From the Candidates to You:
Our Candidate for Congress
Dan Seals

Dan Seals

We are proud to  present  Dan Seals - the grassroots favorite to represent the people of the 10th Congressional District.  Every Democratic organization in the 10th that has endorsed in this race has endorsed Dan. The largest township, Wheeling, endorsed him by 92%.

Dan has run twice against the most popular Republican in Illinois.  He won 46.6% of the vote in 2006 and 47.4% in 2008. Dan  was not afraid to run against an entrenched, lavishly funded incumbent.  He did the hard work, showed tremendous strength of  character and nearly won against incredible odds.  Dan knows the issues and the voters in our District, and he'll continue to fight for our values as our Congressman.

This is the second in our series from and about the candidates endorsed by the membership of NTDO.
Dan Seals for Congress, for Us

From health care reform and an economic crisis to two foreign wars and a possible nuclear Iran, the stakes are high for the 2010 Election. We can't miss the opportunity to elect someone who will be a strong voice in Washington, fight for our ideals and values, and work with President Obama to institute lasting change.

That person is Dan Seals.

Dan's unique policy and business background is exactly what we need in Congress to turn this economic ship around, increase economic development and get men and women back to work.  He has a master's degree in international economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He has been an aide to the Assistant Secretary of Commerce and an Economics Fellow in the Senate.  He helped design green jobs programs for the City of Chicago and taught public policy at Northwestern University. But his experience isn't just academic and governmental. He has also served as a Director at GE and currently works as a consultant to small businesses.

In Congress, he will use his business experience to help restore fiscal discipline in government after years of massive budget deficits, by demanding pay-as-you-go budgeting rules that stop Congress from spending more without knowing how they're going to pay for it.

No candidate knows the 10th District like Dan does. From Dan's hometown of Wilmette up to Waukegan, only Dan has taken the time to get to know each community and the challenges and opportunities they face.  That is why 47.4 percent of the district voted for him in 2008.  That is why he holds the record for the most votes ever cast for a Democratic Congressional Candidate.  Of course, the reason for such strong support is that he had  the courage to stand up and challenge the incumbent when few others would.  He will bring that knowledge and determination to fight for us in Washington.

Dan Seals has been with us, fought with us, and will continue to stand up for us and we encourage you to not only vote for him on February 2nd but to volunteer to help spread his message to rest of the voters of the 10th District.

Dan Seals on the Issues:  Economic Recovery, Health Care, Education and the Environment

Economic Recovery
There is a tremendous amount of economic pain in our community.  A lot of people have asked Dan  what can be done to address it. Recently, Dan Seals held a forum addressing economic recovery in our communities.  With unemployment up 56% from last year in the 10th District, we need an economic solution to help middle and working class families.

Dan knows that that not only do we have to get men and women back to work right now, we have to invest in solutions to spur long term economic growth.  He believes that we need to take three major steps to turn this economy around.

His plan to economic recovery includes:

·       Investing in small businesses;
·       Expanding loan availability for small businesses;
·       Passing major health care reform; and
·       Reducing the national debt.

Health Care
We spend twice as much on healthcare as the average industrialized nation, and get poorer results for our population and our companies.  Dan has trouble accepting that every other industrialized country has figured out how to solve this problem, while we continue to struggle with it.  His view of health care reform includes a commitment to lower costs, improve quality, and expand coverage.
A Strong Grassroots Movement Behind Dan Seals

Dan Seals' campaign is a true bottom-up organization with thousands of supporters across the district and hundreds of volunteers in their offices each week to help send him to Washington. The people of the 10th District are with Dan.

The momentum behind Dan Seals is incredible and continues to build every single week.  In the past few weeks, the Illinois Federation of Teachers endorsed Dan as well as Congressman Jay Inslee, who is a leader in Congress on environmental issues. The Independent Voters of Illinois-Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO) just released their endorsement of Dan too.

Join the movement today by visiting www.dansealsforcongress.com/action! In approximately two weeks, early voting begins.  Time is of the essence. Drop by one of their offices and give them a hand--even if it's just 30 minutes on your way home, every bit of time helps.
Dan's Stand on Israel

"I am absolutely committed to the safety and
security of Israel. As a Member of Congress, I
will be committed to the security of America's
only truly democratic ally in the region, Israel
- and to the belief that Israel's gain is our gain,
and Israel's struggles are our struggles."
-Dan Seals

The special relationship between the United States and Israel is founded upon their shared belief in democracy and freedom, and now the United States and Israel are partners in the struggle against terrorism.  The United States can best promote peace by giving Israel the support it needs to take risks for peace, and by standing firm against those who will not even acknowledge its right to exist.

Education

"The Illinois Federation of Teachers is proud to endorse Dan Seals for the 10th Congressional District," said IFT President Ed Geppert, Jr. "Dan has a track record of working tirelessly to improve the lives of the people living in his district, and we know he will continue that leadership in Congress. Dan Seals personifies the type of leader we want in Washington fighting for public education."

It has been said that at the starting line of life, everyone deserves an equal opportunity.  Our education system needs to reflect that aspiration.  From early education to adult education, Dan Seals believes that we need to make changes in order to ensure that more Americans are able to compete in the international marketplace.  Dan began his career as a teacher in Japan and continues to teach at Northwestern University because education is important to him.

Environment

Dan Seals believes that the threat to our environment is the overarching moral challenge of our time. We cannot escape its consequences, because unlike other policy areas, this issue is not partisan and shows no preference for any particular group.  It's literally the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land on which we grow our food.  Progress on these issues requires courage and a commitment to the health and well-being of future generations.
On a personal note, as the father of children that suffer from asthma, Dan is especially concerned about restoring and preserving clean air.  As Congressman, Dan will see that all tools are used to return the environment to its pristine condition for the health of all Americans-regardless of which party holds the White House.
For more information on these issues and many others, please visit www.dansealsforcongress.com/issues.
