From the Candidates to You: Introducing Candidate for
State Central Committeeman
Bill Brandt

|
|
A Word from Bill Crowley |
|
As 10th District State Central Committeeman for the past 10 years, I have devoted my energy to freeing the Republican stranglehold on the 10th District and nurturing a strong, independant Democratic presence. Today, the Democratic Party can proudly point to five state senators, eight state representatives and numerous county, city and village officials in the 10th.
But one Republican refuge has eluded us - the 10th District Congressional seat. Today, we have an open seat and a sterling opportunity. .We must rededicate our energies to this all important goal in 2010. Working together with our new State Central Committeeman, I am confident we can finally realize this goal and claim the 10th Congressional seat for Democrats.
Bill Crowley,
10th District State Central Committeeman (2000 - 2010). |
From the Candidates to You |
|
This is the first in our series of issues brought to you from the candidates themselves. In the weeks between now and the primary you will be hearing from the rest of the NTDO endorsed candidates: Dan Seals, David Hoffman, Patrick Keenan-Devlin, Toni Preckwinkel and Pat Quinn.

Bill Brandt and the Role of the State Central Committeeman |
|
On Sunday, December 6 the New Trier Democratic Organization endorsed Bill Brandt for 10th District State Central Committeeman. In response to the endorsement, Brandt says, "Having the support of the New Trier Democrats means a great deal - it's one of the most organized and conscientious Democratic organizations in Illinois. They obviously recognize the significance of this race, despite its down-ballot placement."
The role of the State Central Committeeman is not only to act as a district representative to the Party, but also to serve as an organizer by promoting Party principles and programs within the district. In practice, this means the Committeeman is responsible for assisting in the election of Democratic candidates, particularly those in his district. In order to effectively accomplish this and promote the programs of the Party, the Committeeperson must work, largely through grassroots organizing, to grow and strengthen party organization. Another vital duty of the Committeeman is to develop ways to finance activities and to develop a coordinated finance plan to strengthen and build a more sustainable party. Members of the State Central Committee also plan the State Convention, establish the Party Platform, and work to implement an organized plan to improve the performance of the Democratic Party.
Under the rules of the Illinois Democratic Party, each Congressional District shall be represented by one Committeewoman and one Committeeman. The retirement of former State Central Committeeman Bill Crowley created the vacancy. Lauren Beth Gash, the10th District's State Central Committeewoman, is running unopposed and Bill looks forward to working with her. |
Bill Brandt's Agenda: Electing More Democrats Today... Strengthening the Democratic Party for Tomorrow |
|
Bill Brandt is running to be our next State Central Committeeman to help 10th District Democrats achieve important immediate goals. Above all, he's ready to help us turn the 10th from "Red to Blue" in 2010-by sending a Democrat to Congress for the first time in more than 30 years. "People in our community have been waiting more than a generation to send one of our own - a Democrat - to Congress," said Brandt. "I'm ready to work alongside Committeewoman Lauren Beth Gash to help 10th district Democrats unite to achieve that goal in November," he said. At the same time, Bill Brandt knows that the role of State Central Committeeman can have a long-term impact, too. Brandt said, "Once we've elected Democrats to office; we have to ensure Democrats stay in those positions. I want to make certain that the Democratic Party remains a strong force in the 10th District well into the future- that means bringing the district's current activists together, grassroots organizing to strengthen the party base, and mentoring and empowering our future leaders." To be a Democrat in the 10th district isn't as lonely as it used to be thanks in large part to local organizations like the New Trier Dems. Brandt plans to draw on the accomplishments of groups like NTDO using them as a model to promote grassroots organizing and enhance widespread participation in our communities and throughout the district. As a Trustee at Loyola University and a member of the National Advisory Committee for University of California's Institute of Governmental Studies, Bill has devoted himself to promoting and encouraging youth involvement and leadership in the public policy and political arenas. As State Central Committeeman he will build on this role by helping local organizations identify, recruit and empower the next generation of democratic leaders in our community "My goal is a victory for Democrats in 2010-- and many victories beyond that," he said. "By adding more active Democrats to our ranks and mentoring the next generation of leaders, we can help ensure that the fight for the values we share-- a cleaner environment, a woman's right to choose and issues of economic and social justice-- will continue for years to come." |

Democrats Endorse Bill |
Democrats from across our community have shown their support for Bill Brandt in his race for State Central Committeeman. They recognize that Bill has the experience to be an effective voice for our party and to help lead our candidates to victory. The endorsements-- including strong shows of support by the New Trier Democratic Organization and the Democrats of Northfield Township -- also underscore Bill's commitment to fight for change and reform. "I am gratified to have received the support of these organizations and elected officials not merely because they represent tens of thousands of voters across our district, but-- even more so-- because these Democrats have been at the forefront in the fight for accountability, transparency and for an end to 'politics as usual'," he said. The list keeps growing. Here are a few of the leaders and organizations who have endorsed Bill Brandt for State Central Committeeman: New Trier Township Democratic Organization Democrats of Northfield Township Personal PAC Congressman Mike Quigley Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky State Senator Jeff Schoenberg State Representative Elaine Nekritz State Representative Mark Walker Cook County Commissioner Forrest Claypool And-there are more to come! Be sure to check back at Bill's website www.DemsforBrandt.com in the weeks ahead for more endorsements. Through all of these instances, Bill has gained a reputation for his commitment to honesty and integrity.
In his nonpaid and volunteer role as Chairman of the Illinois Finance Authority, Brandt has helped bring credibility and efficiency to one of the nation's largest self-financed entities principally engage in issuing taxable and tax-exempt bonds, making loans, and investing capital for businesses, non-profit organizations and local government. In deciding to accept the appointment, Brandt says, "The IFA is much too important an institution and service provider to ignore. It is an essential piece to the economic vitality of Illinois and to its people." Since the start of his appointment in 2008, Bill has spent more than 1,500 nonpaid hours working to improve the IFA for the people of Illinois. Candidates at every level recognize Bill Brandt as someone who has the willingness to put in the hours and who has the resourcefulness to pull people together and get things done. Congressman Quigley stated, "Having worked with Bill I know he is a man of his word- committed and hard working. He was an invaluable asset to my campaign and I look forward to working with him in the future." Bill Brandt has been brought onto Presidential, Senatorial, Congressional and Local campaigns to help candidates win. "Bill's advice and involvement are crucial to Democrats getting elected," claimed State Rep. Elaine Nekritz. Brandt understands the importance of grassroots Democratic organizing and believes a strong State Central Committeeman could work to help elect more Democrats in our local city and township governments. Bill will be a State Central Committeeman who has a proven track record of getting involved, putting in the hours and getting things done, while preserving the integrity of any campaign. |
