Mark Kirk is very good at what he does. Unfortunately, what he does isn't very good for his constituents. Yesterday he held a town hall on health care in Northbrook. And he was very good at presenting half-truths, innuendo and the verbatim talking points of Republican strategist Frank Luntz.
What would be good for his constituents, or any voter anywhere in America, would be to hear an honest presentation of today's health care situation and the proposals being debated in Congress. To hear an honest comparison of our system's present success versus those of other industrialized nations. To hear true stories from real victims of the insurance industry's bureaucracy and to hear their Congressman respond candidly, instead of simply nodding his head and immediately moving on to the next audience member -- which was Mark Kirk's reaction.
What Mark Kirk did smoothly do was present carefully selected charts and statistics that derided the Democratic Party's health care reform proposals while generally praising our nation's present quality of health care. Of course, he did mention things that inarguably need improvement. Things such as better use of technology to keep records and share medical information. But there were huge gaps and omissions in Kirk's information. Despite that, his audience -- invited to his 10 a.m. Tuesday morning townhall -- loved it. It was pretty clear why Congressman Kirk timed his meeting for a mid-week morning. It's a time that's a lot less likely to attract large numbers of working people. But it's a fine hour for gathering older voters who have been frightened by the language they're hearing on their favorite radio and TV shows. (Guess which ones.) Some were convinced that if the Democrat's reforms become law, "45% of all doctors will leave their profession." Others strongly believed that "tort reform" would virtually solve everything. There was lots of enthusiasm for Kirk's disdain for "government involvement" (this in an audience largely on Medicare) and little to be heard from the floor about the tens of millions of Americans without health insurance protection.
All in all, it was another successful outing for our local congressman and aspiring U.S senator, doing what he does best.

Upcoming events for Democratic Primary candidates:
|
No event announcements were sent to the News this week. But...All of the candidates that you support could use your help. In New Trier, we have the good fortune to have a number of smart, honest, Progressive Democrats running for office. We should never underestimate the sacrifice and personal commitment they are making. Running for any office requires it. --- And most of us aren't willing to do it. What we can do is help them in their efforts. It starts with going to their websites and volunteering your help and/or your financial support.* *This is the last day for filing third quarter campaign financial reports, so a donation today is even more welcome. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Petition forms for most Democratic Primary candidates are available at the NTDO office. If you would like to help a candidate you support, call the office Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9 a.m and noon to find out which petition forms are available. 847-446-8030 |
