Executive Director's Report

Growing Oregon's Global Impact

David Kenney portrait
Oregon BEST's David Kenney
With Gov. Kulongoski's recent signing of an MOU between the State of Oregon and the Iraq Ministry of Higher Education, along with an MOU between the State of Oregon and the Qatar National Food Security Programme in September, Oregon's sustainability expertise and reputation is going global. In early 2009, Oregon BEST provided initial seed funding of $27,000 that leveraged more than $300,000 in federal funds to enable a group of faculty from Iraqi universities to visit Oregon to learn about our higher education, research, and business expertise in sustainable engineering. Led by Oregon BEST researcher, Catherine Mater, Oregon State University has taken that exchange to the next level by supporting a nationwide sustainable engineering initiative in Iraq's universities (listen to Mater on OPB's Think Out Loud).

Earlier this year, I joined an Oregon delegation to Qatar to engage in discussions about how Oregon effectively executes public-private partnerships in green building/development and agriculture. That trip has led to multiple business opportunities for Oregon firms, and both Portland State University and OSU are engaged in discussions with partners in Qatar to create shared research programs.

Both these international relationships present opportunities for Oregon business services, export markets for Oregon products, and new sources of research funding. Oregon BEST is proud to be a contributor to these exciting opportunities to support Oregon being a player beyond our borders.

Oregon BEST helps produce "Green Science Oregon"

Green Science Oregon logo

Oregon BEST is playing a key role in helping produce a new television series, "Green Science Oregon," which touts Oregon's position as a national leader in green research, science, and business. The show started airing this fall on stations throughout Oregon, and producer Rick Coyle is looking for more story ideas, and sponsors, for future 30-minute episodes.

Oregon BEST is connecting Coyle's Portland-based company, World Video Productions, with potential story subjects and topics, including Oregon BEST researchers, labs facilities, and Oregon businesses and organizations engaged with Oregon BEST. Current episodes can be viewed online at the Green Science Oregon website, where participating TV stations and schedules are also listed. If your company, lab facility, or organization is engaged is green science of any kind, please email Coyle directly with your story ideas, or to inquire about sponsorship opportunities.

Legislators Tour Oregon BEST Labs
Lawmakers get up-close look at shared-user research facilities

Lokey Labs/SuNRISE PV LabLast month, tours of three signature research facilities affiliated with Oregon BEST welcomed state legislators, business owners, entrepreneurs, and others interested in learning about the equipment and expertise available at the shared-user labs, which are helping Oregon businesses succeed and speeding commercialization of faculty research.

The tours included two Oregon BEST facilities in Corvallis and one in Eugene: The Oregon Process Innovation Center for Sustainable Solar Cell Manufacturing on HP's Corvallis Campus, the Green Building Materials Lab on the OSU campus, and the SuNRISE Photovoltaics Lab (located in the Lokey Labs, pictured above) at the UO in Eugene. All tours highlighted how business clients - ranging from Oregon-based Tau Science, Voxtel, Corvallis Tool Company, ShelterWorks, and Grape Solar to large firms Sony and HP - are tapping the facilities to speed job creation.

Read the Corvallis Gazette-Times story and the Eugene Register-Guard story and sidebar article describing the tours and capabilities of the facilities.
