  Communion with God Part II

The last time we had our discussion on Communion with God, we had some questions to explore. One of these questions was "why are people sick"? We also discussed the issue of taking Communion in private, where we briefly discussed some of the benefits. We then discussed that healing was one of those benefits. Just to recap, we begin with the issue of taking Communion corporately once a month such as in a church service as well as taking Communion privately on a more regular basis. If you recall, we used a scripture from 1Corinthians 11:25, which states:  "...For as often as you do this, do this in remembrance of me " And 1Cor. 11:26 specifically repeats the above verse by stating:

"For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup ye do shew the Lord's death til he come.

What exactly does this (1Cor. 11:26) scripture mean? We can answer the question by taking a look at the origin of this biblical doctrine. How and when Communion began is a natural place to start.

Private Communion

Private Communion began during Biblical history. In fact, there are numerous occasions where there was Communion with God, but the first noted Communion instituted by God Himself begins in Genesis. Before the fall of man, God communed with Adam and Eve in the Garden. But in Genesis 15, verse one, a conversation ensues between God and Abram. God made a covenant with His friend Abram, and changed his name to Abraham, during which God entered into an agreement filled with promises for all eternity. Let's take a look at what happened during that conversation:

In paraphrasing, Genesis 15:1-20 brings us to a vision Abram received from God about Abram's future as a father of not only one son, but many descendants. Abram had initially complained about the lack of an heir to inherit his riches. Abram was the richest man during that time in Biblical history. He had so much material wealth that he and his nephew, Lot, went their separate ways so that there could be enough room to maintain all of the cattle and other material riches they each possessed.

During this vision, God told Abram that he would receive a great reward. He also told him that He would defend him. He was admonished by God to not be afraid.

Abram pleased God very much when he believed that God would reward him with children, particularly a son, to inherit his riches. Taking the Covenant a step further, God asked Abram to sacrifice several of his animals by cutting them in halves. After putting Abram in a deep sleep, God walked through the pieces of the body parts of the animals to swear by Himself a promise to make Abram a father of many, and give Abram's descendants great wealth and land to reside upon.

The promise also included deliverance for Abram's descendants and punishment to the nations that held them captive in slavery Genesis 15: 1-20; Genesis 17:1-14 ncv.

Abram and God fellowshipped together often. They broke baked bread and ate together as trusted friends. "Abram hurried to the tent where Sarah was and said to her, "Hurry, prepare twenty quarts of fine, flour, and make it into loaves of bread" Genesis 18:6 ncv.

But it was the faith of Abram, now called Abraham, during their Communion together that sealed the deal for the promises God made with him. One qualifier for these promises to manifest between God, Abraham, and his descendants was that, Abraham and his descendants must keep the promises established by God. "Then God said to Abraham, "You and your descendants must keep this agreement from now on. This is my agreement with you and all your descendants, which you must obey. Although the deal for the promises to come was sealed, there was one more command in which God required of Abraham. God suggested to Abraham to offer up his only son as a sacrifice.

Again, Abraham passed the test through his obedience to God Genesis 22:1-18. "The Lord says, 'Because you did not keep back your son, your only son, from me, I make you this promise by my own name: I will surely bless you and give you many descendants. They will be as many as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore, and they will capture the cities of their enemies. Through your descendants all the nations on the earth will be blessed, because you obeyed me.'" Genesis 22:16-18 ncv.

To further explain Communion and why it is important, we now look at the role Jesus and His disciples played in the establishment of Communion with others.

Corporate Communion

It was a common occurrence for Jesus to fellowship with His disciples. The night before Jesus' crucifixion was no different. Communion with the Lord, which is also known as the Last Supper or the Lord's Supper, was held in an upper room, and bears a very important event in Biblical history. Not only were Jesus' disciples present during the last supper with the Lord, but others were as well.

Jesus met His supporters in a private room, a place unknown to His attackers -Pontus Pilate and his soldiers.

It was there that Jesus gave specific instructions, provided revelation and, warned of His impending death. He also promised that He would never leave them, but that He had to go away, and that He would return.

John 14: 3 ...I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am there ye may be also."

We also know that upon Jesus' death, there was a resurrection, a burial, and salvation for all who would believe and receive Him as Lord. If we examine each of these events, we will find that our blood-bought right to His promises still remain for us today. Let's examine some of these promises:

One of these promises from the Lord is that we would do greater works of healing than was done during Jesus' earthly ministry. Another promise was that in Communion with Jesus, He would leave another Comforter. He further promised to show His disciples of what was to come. So it is with us; when we come into Communion with the Holy Spirit -the Comforter, He assures us of His comfort and love as part of the plan for our salvation. Jesus spoke about this particular promise in John 14:26:

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Jesus also gave us peace in Communion with Him as part of the promise.

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.

Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" John 14: 27 kjv.

Therefore, be at peace until we continue our discussion on Communion with God.
