To Our Friends and Family,
It is the beginning of a New Year and a good time to look toward the future with hope. Make it a happy, healthy, joyful year, one with laughter and love.
As a patient, O.L., just said to me, "I don't need to be 16, but I'd like to finish this business with dignity."
Keep that Ageless Attitude!!!!
Warmly,
Dr. Dabbah, Barbara, Karen and Robin |

Another Reason to Enjoy Red WineThe compound in red wine, resveratrol, known to be an antioxidant in dark-skinned fruit, is now thought to help improve balance in the older population. The study is unsure whether it is removing the byproducts of dopamine metabolism (which kills cells) or increasing resistance in the cells themselves. The downside? A 150-pound person would have to drink 700 glasses of red wine a day to get the result that show this improvement. I guess we need a supplement. Men and Hairloss- More Than Just VanityAs we know, men tend to "feel their age" not in their hips but on their head. One hair-loss medication, Propecia, has been identified in a small percentage of men as causing low libido and erectile dysfunction in some men. A study by an assistant professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and health Sciences in Washington D.C., preliminarily found that finasteride (the generic name for Propecia) caused some depression in those young men involved in the study. Of the 61 young men whose average age was 25, 11% had mild depression, 28% had moderate symptoms and 36% had severe symptoms, 39% reported suicidal thoughts and an additional 5% said they "would like to kill [them]sel[ves]. Compare this to those who had not used finasteride: 10% had mild symptoms of depression and 3% had suicidal thoughts.
There is more that needs to be studied, but it is thought that the relationship between the drug and depression is a more "direct" one than the fact that men are depressed secondarily because of sexual dysfunction. On the label depression was listed as a side effect in 2010. MSNBC.msn.com, 8/13/2012 |

Pretty or Protection?
Our eyes age with us and it is now thought that protecting our eyes from sunlight will go far to protecting us against cataracts and macular degeneration. Cataracts are treatable, and in some cases, macular degeneration is too. However, a lot of vision is lost with macular degeneration. All sunglasses should have UV blockage. The more expensive, designer ones usually do. But the inexpensive pretty ones you buy on the street?? It was found that some bought on the streets of NYC absorbed only 38% of the UV rays, despite the sticker stating "UV 400 protection." Those wilth darker tint may be better, but "don't let the tint fool you," says ophthalmologist Marc Werner, MD. He says you should have your eye doctor test them. FoxNews.com, 8/13/2012 |

EGGPLANT, PEAR AND PECORINO SALAD
This recipe sounds so delicious and healthy. I thought it would be a nice addition for Rosh Hashanah, or anytime. |
1/3 cup walnuts
One 1 and 1/4-lb eggplant, peeled and sliced lengthwise, 1/4 inch thick
Extra-virgin olive oil
Salt
Freshly ground pepper
1 TBL unsalted butter (can use olive oil)
2 Bosc Pears- peeled, cored and sliced lengthwise, 1/4 inch thick
1 TBL Cognac or other brandy
1 small garlic clove, minced
1 and 1/2 TBL red wine vinegar
2 TBL chopped parsley
1 TBL chopped chives
1 TBL honey
Thin shavings of Pecorino Toscano cheese
-Preheat the oven to 350. In a pie plate, toast the walnuts for about 5 minutes, until lightly browned. Let cool then coarsely chop.
-Light a grill or preheat a grill pan. Brush the eggplant slices with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the eggplant over moderately high heat until lightly browned and tender, about 2 minutes per side.
-In a large skillet, melt the butter. Add the pear slices and cook over moderate heat, tossing, until just starting to soften, 3 minutes. Add the Cognac and toss the pears to coat thoroughly and remove from heat.
