Wondering How Much That Surgery Costs?
Did you know that plastic surgeons cannot discuss fees? Yet comparative shopping should not mean fee-shopping; a patient is not purchasing the same dress from Saks as she is in Neiman Marcus.
Not all  board-certified plastic surgeons (from the American Board of Plastic Surgery) are the same. A surgeon's eye, hands, ability to achieve what he/she sees, the patient's trust in his or her surgeon, as well as the surgeon's ability to handle any and all complications are what differentiate one from the next. I've always known our fees are competitive but not ridiculous. A New York board-certified plastic surgeon gave the low-down on costs for 7 procedures.
Hmmmm.... maybe we oughta be raising our fees? Check it out.

(1) Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty) - $7,000 - $12,000;
(2) Chin Implant only - $3,000 - $5,000;
(3) Nose Job (rhinoplasty) - $6,000 - $12,000;
(4) Liposuction - $5,000 - $13,000, depending on the amount done;
(5) Facial Makeover - $10,000 -  $20,000, depending on whether or not the following is included: brow, eyelids, and fat grafting. It also does not include deep peels or laser;
(6) Mommy Makeover - $15,000 - $25,000 (includes breast surgery, tummy tuck and liposuction.

Major Ewwww.... Factor

Apparently, the newest mumblings for post-partum depression, loss of energy and breast milk production is the mother's consumption of her baby's placenta. 'Mad Men's' January Jones did it and says, "We're the only mammals who don't ingest their placentas."  It isn't the cannibalistic-idea of "eating" the placenta, rather the placentas are freeze-dried, powdered and put into capsule form.  There are studies going on to determine whether or not the anecdotal information corresponds scientifically. Really gross... right? (Maybe it will help her acting too!!)

Hormone Confusion and HPV Concerns

Don't freak out...but there is a new study indicating extended use of hormones to alleviate the symptoms of menopause does increase a woman't risk of breast cancer. Dr. Wendy Chen, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, states that this study showed that the use of any kind of hormone (combination estrogen/progesterone or estrogen alone) for more than 10 years slightly raises the chance of breast cancer. The suggestion? Use the least amount for the shortest time.

In a different study, it was found that black women are 40% more likely to develop cervical cancer and twice as likely to die from it as compared to white women. The reason was thought that black women had less access to health care. A study of 326 white women and 113 black women at the University of South Carolina found that black women had a harder time getting rid of the virus. It took 18 months to clear the virus as contrasted with 12 months in white women. After 2 years, 56% of the black women still tested positive and 24% of white women tested positive. HPV causes problems if they are long-term.
