We have been asked Dr. Dabbah's availability during the Thanksgiving and December holidays. The answer is he has no plans to leave South Florida; so you can feel secure that he is around 'round the clock for you to have your surgery to look terrific for the New Year! Other news, Restylane has just been FDA-approved for lips. So get them ready for the the mistletoe, or New Year's Eve!! Have a joyful Thanksgiving. Warmly, Robin |

UNIBOOB | Yes, there is such a thing. One consequence of bad breast augmentation surgery is, when making the pockets within which the breast implants sit, the surgeon releases the attachment of the breast at the sternum. The result is a "uniboob", where the implant pockets connect in the middle and the implants can, and do, touch each other. msnbc.com, 9/27/2011. This article emphasizes that only board-certified plastic surgeons should be performing these procedures and there is no question that is true. We have seen two patients recently with this result, only one of which came in for a revision. The other patient who came in for another reason, did not even address the result, which makes me wonder if she didn't know any differently. How concerning is that!?!

SEARCHING FOR A PLASTIC SURGEON? | 10 RED FLAGS TO HELP YOU CHOOSE
(1) Choose one who is board-certified by the AMERICAN BOARD OF PLASIC SURGERY (ASPS);
(2) "Don't bargain price when it comes to something serious like plastic surgery," says the president of the ASPS, Dr. Malcolm Roth. Don't used discount coupons;
(3) Plastic surgeons should give alternative suggestions but "don't use a surgeon who tries to convince you to do more surgery than you may want". It's a collaboration between patient and surgeon;
(4) Beware of heavy advertising. "The number of ads a surgeon displays is often inversely proportional to the quality of the doctor";
(5) "Let the hospital vet for you." If a doctor lacks hospital privileges, it may be evidence that the hospital questions his/her ability;
(6) There are no guarantees and even the best plastic surgeon can have a result that is less than perfect. "If it's too good to be true, it probably is";
(7) Bungling the consultation - The surgeon, not the assistant or nurse, should do the consultation to determine candidacy for the surgery;
(8) Although most plastic surgery is constantly evolving, most surgeons USE THE SAME BASIC TECHNIQUES because they are proven SAFE AND EFFECTIVE. "Beware of surgeons who say they use "revolutionary" or "innovative" procedures;
(9) A malpractice suit doesn't necessarily mean the plastic surgeon is incompetent; even first-rate plastic surgeons are sued, with or without reason. But be wary of the surgeon who has been sued more than a few times or censored by the state board;
(10) No doctor can please all of his/her patients, but be suspicious of a doctor who gets lots of bad reviews. As for doctor rating sites? Who is to say whether they are real or planted by competitors. Dr. Roth says it's not a good idea to put much stock in them. CBSNews.com, 9/28/2011 |
CALIFORNIA BANS TANNING BEDS FOR MINORS |
California is the first state to ban tanning beds for minors under the age of 14, but allowing those between the ages of 14 and 18 to do so with the consent of a parent. msnbc.com, 10/9/2011

3 GENETIC FAULTS AND MELANOMA |
In a British study of 3,000 patients, three genetic faults found on a gene involved in DNA repair increased the patients chance of melanoma from 1 in 60 to 1 in 46 if the patient inherited the 3 genetic faults. Already known risk factors for melanoma include light eyes, fair skin, blond or red hair, a high number of moles, burning easily from the sun and having a family history of the disease. We know that overexposure to UV increases the risk of developing melanoma and this evidence looks to even increase that risk. Interestingly, it is the same gene linked to narcolepsy and the same that triggers automatic cell death.

Ginger-Pumpkin Souffle |
1 1/2 cups unsweetened soymilk (not low- or no-fat)
1 TBL minced peeled fresh ginger
4 large egg yolks
3/4 cup sugar
5 TBL all-purpose flour
1 cup solid-pack canned pumpkin
8 large egg whites
Preparation: Preheat oven to 375. Butter 8 6-oz ramekins. In medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, bring soy milk to boil. Add ginger, remove pan from heat, cover, and let steep 30 minutes. Strain soy milk, discarding ginger, and set aside.
In large nonrective bowl, whisk together egg yolks and 6 TBL of sugar. Whisk in flour until well combined. Gradually add hot milk, whisking constantly to prevent curdling. Return yolk mixture to saucepan and set over medium heat. Cook, whisking constantly, until custard boils and thickens enough to coat back of a spoon, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to large bowl, whisk in pumpkin puree, and set aside.
Using electric mixer with whisk attachment, beat egg whites until foamy and slightly opaque. With mixer running, add remaining 6 TBL sugar, 1 TBL at a time, then beat until stiff but not dry. Fold 1/3 of egg whites into pumpkin mixture to lighten, then add mixture to remaining whites, folding in gently but thoroughly. Spoon batter into ramekins, filling almost to top, and lightly run finger around inside rim to create a "moat." Place ramekins in a large baking pan. Place baking pan on middle oven rack and add hot water around ramekins to depth of 1 inch. Bake until souffles have risen well above rim and tops are golden brown, about 25 minutes. Serve immediately.
Makes 8 individual souffles.
