Did You Know?
In addition to fighting Alzheimer's and prostate cancer, the flavanoids in grapes may protect you from skin-damaging ultraviolet radiation?  They apparently stop the chemical reaction that kills skin cells and causes sun damage., says researchers from the University of Barcelona and the Spanish National Reseach Council. So, enjoy that wine and don't get sunburned!! Age GameFAT TRANSFER TO LOWER EYES?
It seems the "new" procedure for lower eyes is fat transfer surgery. The procedure involves taking fat from the stomach or thighs and injecting it below the lower eyelid, to puff up the area. Surgeons say that it lasts longer than fillers, which need to be repeated annually, at least. The majority of patients showed improvement at the first year, however, the data isn't complete at 2 to 3 years postprocedure since only 22 of the 99 returned.
The article states that the results "may" last 3 years. The most common complications are asymmetries and lumps under the eyes.  The cost is being published at $3,500 to $4,000.
As you know, Dr. Dabbah is not a fan of injecting any filler or fat under the eyes. The skin is very thin and if not done perfectly, or if the fat isn't viable , it can be seen as lumps and asymmetries. Fat is resolvable so depending on the quality of fat, the results may not be long-lasting. MSNBC.com 7/22/2011
Most patients who are questioning lower eyelid procedures have a laxity of the skin, requiring excellent skin care or skin resurfacing, or have laxity of the muscle, requiring any protrusion of fat be pushed behind the muscle and the muscle be tightened (lower eyelid, or blepharoplasty, surgery).  This surgery lasts many years, 8 to 10 years or more, despite the aging process.  It is a technical surgery, difficult in many surgeons hand, and many have given up on it, choosing fillers as an easier alternative.

Little Boy with SunscreenSUNSCREEN LABELS

         (easier to read)

To date, the FDA has required only testing for ultraviolet B rays that cause sunburn.  That's what the SPF measure is based on. The FDA decided that protection against UVA should be proportional to protection against UVB. New regulations will require testing for the more dangerous ultraviolet A, which can penetrate glass and most commonly associated with cancer and aging skin. Look for SPF of at least 15 and a label that specifically states "broad spectrum".  If it doesn't, it will carry a warning : "This product has been shown only to help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging."  Most importantly, any sunscreen, whether "waterproof" or not, must be applied frequently through the course of the day.

Last year, melanoma was diagnosed in 68,130 people in the United States, with 8,700 dying. MSNBC.com, 6/14/2011

                     SENIORS WANTING BREAST IMPLANTS?

Youthfulness is not just in the eye (or face) of the beholder... How about breast augmentation? Many women in their 60s and 70s are opting to have surgery to achieve a more youthful body.  In July's newsletter I spoke about the baby boomers and the seniors going in for knee and hip replacements in order to stay active in their "aging" bodies and we already know that the numbers of people having facial surgery increases in this age group.  We are now seeing an increase in women choosing breast surgery and tummy tucks to keep up with their youthful faces. People, women in this case, feel emotionally younger than their chronological age and want to to look in the mirror and see a body that corresponds with their passion for life. MSNBC.com, 8/25/2011. And why not? If we are living longer and maintaining active lifestyles, why not be happy with the way we look? Getting cleared for surgery relies on your being a healthy person, regardless of age.

BOTOX NOT JUST FOR COSMETIC PURPOSES
Prior to Botox Cosmetic for crowsfeet, the 11 lines, and forehead wrinkles, Botox was used for patients with dystonia, a neurological disorder in which sustained muscle contractions cause twisting and repetitive movements or normal postures. The good news is the FDA has now just approved Botox for urinary incontinence in patients with neurological problems associated with multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury.  This is such great news for those who suffer silently!!

                   SALMON SLIDERS and CRISPY SLAW
This is a delicious alternative to burgers! To keep it on the lighter side, you can do without the tarter sauce and cream cheese.
Ingredients
1 1/2 to 2 pounds salmon fillet,skin removed
1 TBL lemon pepper seasoning
Canola oil, for grilling
2 TBL spicy brown mustard
2 TBL red wine vinegar
1 teas sugar
1 6 - ounce bag shredded red cabbage
2 scallions,sliced
salt and pepper
1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
1/4 cup tartar sauce
1/4 cup whipped cream cheese, softened
12 mini buns or dinner rolls
Directions:
-Preheat grill to medium-high heat
-Cut the salmon into 2 inch squares so that you have 12 portions, 2 to 3 oz per portion. Sprinkle both sides of each with lemon pepper seasoning
-Brush the grill grates with a paper towel that has been soaked in canola oil. Grill the salmon until just cooked through, about 3 minutes per side
-In a large bowl, whisk together the mustard, red wine viengar and sugar. Add the cabbage and scallions and toss to coat.
-In a small bowl, stir together the sweet chili sauce, tartar sauce and cream cheese.
-Spread 1 teas of sauce on both top and bottom of each bun. Place a square of salmon and some crispy slaw and ENJOY!
