Coffee Cuts Prostate Cancer Risk
                        coffee beans
I've written about how coffee contains antioxidants and antiinflammatory compounds that promote good health. Now, research by Harvard shows that men who drink coffee regularly are less likely to develop prostate cancer.  This applies to caffeinated (hi test) or decaffeinated. Men who drank 6 or more cups of coffee a day were 20% less likely to develop any form of prostate cancer and 60% less likely to develop lethal prostate cancer. Harvard School of Public Health website; CBSNews.com, 5/17/2011. Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among American men, after lung cancer.

Circumcision Ban in San Francisco
Get this! With all that this country is dealing with, what is San Francisco thinking??? A proposed law would prohibit circumcision in males under the age of 18, regardless of religion.  Proponents of the ban say the procedure is painful and needless. Objectors say it helps prevent the spread of disease and/or serves an important religious purpose. Incredible!!

            HAPPINESS FOUND IN THE  ARTS

Enjoying the arts has been shown to have a beneficial effect on men's happiness, regardless of other factors, including socioeconomic status. A study by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, found that men get more of a perceived benefit from receptive cultural activities (i.e., museums, theatre). Men also felt healthier doing volunteer work, outdoor activities and exercise (creative cultural activities). And, the two seem inter-related; high cultural participation has been linked to high physical activity.

MANLY VEGETARIAN MEALS
As you may know, Dr. Dabbah does not eat red meat or chicken. For him, finding something delicious, nutritious and filling is easy. In addition to fish and seafood, there are many ways to get your protein. Options for protein are dairy products: eggs, cheese, yogurt and milk.  Other ideas are legumes like dried peas, lentils, beans and soy products and nuts and seeds. If you want a hamburger, substitute a bean, lentil or veggie burger.  When in need of broth, opt for vegetable broth rather than chicken or beef broth. Or try this burger on Father's Day. The portobello mushroom is heavier and gives the ooomph of a hamburger.
PORTOBELLO BURGERS (makes 4)
1/2 cup purchased pesto
1/4 cup mayonnaise
4 sourdough, whole grain or ciabatta rolls, split horizontally
4 portobello mushrooms, stemmed, dark gills scraped out
olive oil
Roasted red peppers from jar, drained.
4 cups arugula
4 slices of provolone cheese
Preparation:
-Stir pesto and mayonnaise in small bowl to blend. Season with salt and pepper.
-Prepare barbecue (medium-high heat). Grill rolls, cut side down, until lightly toasted. Spread grilled side with pesto/mayo.
-Brush both sides of mushrooms with olive oil and sprinkly with salt and pepper. Grill, rounded side up, for 4 minutes. Turn mushrooms over and grill until tender, about 4 minutes. Place a mushroom on one side of the roll, with arugula and a slice of cheese. Press roll tops on and serve.

The Art of Shaving
The Art of the Smoother Shave
Wait at least 3 minutes in a warm shower before shaving. The warm water softens the hair shaft and allows for a closer shave without nicking the skin. And, to extend the life of your razor, dribble some olive oil on the blade to keep it from rusting, says Diane Woods, barber at King of Shaves. MSN.com, 5/23/2011
