Hi Everyone!! and Happy Mother's Day!!!

It's SUMMER and the perfect time for mom's to take care of themselves.  With the stress of the school year behind us, and the children off enjoying their two months, why not take the time to concentrate on US!!

Many women tell me that they cannot believe they are so vain or that they cannot take the time away from their obligations to take care of themselves with in-office procedures or surgery.  But once convinced, what I see is a glow and I repeatedly hear from women that they can now concentrate on the "important" things and not worry about how they look. To us, that's what cosmetic surgery is about. So, take the hour, or the two weeks, for yourself and truly change your outlook on life by starting from within!!!

7 Year Old Has Plastic Surgery

A little girl from South Dakota underwent otoplasty, ear surgery, to reposition the ears closer to the head. The mother told "Good Morning America" that the surgery was to prevent any potential bullying or ridicule by children based on her looks. It seems to be a controversial issue as some say the girl may never be bullied and the surgery was more for the mother's well being.  Others say if she is bullied, the ridicule will toughen her up. Interesting discussion.... What would you do??

LAP BAND SURGERY:

Riskier Than Previously Thought

In one study, half of those who tried LapBand surgery had to get the implants taken out because they either stopped working or the implants started to erode. Over half of the studied 82 patients had to have revisionary surgery because of malfunction or complications. Half the the 82 had the Lap Bands removed later and, of those, 14 had gastric bypass surgery. There was, however, in those patients who did not have complications, an average loss of 43 percent of the original weight and a body mass index loss of 7.8 percent.

MELANOMA DRUG EXTENDS LIFE

The FDA has approved a medication, called Yervoy, which is being touted as the first to prolong the lives of those diagnosed with late-stage or metastatic melanoma. The patients lived an average of four months longer than those who had been given medications previously approved by FDA (over 13 years ago). Though this may not be considered a huge leap, it is considered a serious step. What is exciting is that there are "other things in the pipeline" and "this is the first in a series of important new therapies for melanoma", says Tim Turnham, director of the Melanoma Research Foundation.  There are side effects and severe reactions caused by the drug, including fatal immune system reactions.

IS SUGAR TOXIC?

When we think about the amount of sugar we consume, be it high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, fructose, we automatically think about obesity. Certainly, that is a concern. But is that the only potential health issue we need to worry about?

PAY ATTENTION to what happens to our bodies when we consume anything with sugar in it. It immediately stimulates the pancreas to release insulin. It also stimulates the liver and we know that sugar that is not burned immediately is turn to fat.  Over the course of time, and it is different for each person, the pancreas can get worn out and diabetes sets in. And as I have been writing about, there is new information that suggests that insulin works as a growth factor to trigger and stiumulate, feed and nourish tumor cells and, therefore, is implicated in cancer.

FAT TRANSFER AND

BREAST AUGMENTATION

Women who are reticent about putting "foreign objects" into their body wonder about fat transfer as an option for breast enhancement, or as "tweaking" the results of breast reconstruction. The issue is the ability to read mammograms accurately. Whenever fat is introduced to the breast the scar tissue can calcify. These calcifications can be confused with early breast cancer on mammography. Although there are newer ways to fat graft to the breast with potentially less calcification, the research still needs to be done.

ANTI-AGING FOODS -BLUEBERRIES

Blueberries
Blueberries are known for their antioxidant, disease-fighting, power. The other health benefits include protection against cancer, urninary infections and the build-up of HDL cholesterol in the arteries. Blueberries also contain anthocianin, a compound that gives them their deep color, which helps fight memory loss. AOLHealth.com,11/5/10 and CBSNews.com, 4/27/11
(Apparently, there is a variety sold in South America which has even better properties than the ones sold in the United States.)

Blueberry Soup

1 1lb bag of frozen unsweetened blueberries

1 cup water

5 TBL sugar

2 1/4-inch-thick lemon slices

1 cinnamon stick

pinch of salt

1/2 teas vanilla extract

Low fat vanilla yogurt, frozen or any frozen yogurt

Bring first 7 ingredients to boil in heavy medium saucepan over high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.  Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until berries are very tender, about 15 minutes. discard lemon slices and cinnamon stick. Puree half of the soup in blender or processor. Transfer all of the soup to medium bowl and refrigerate until very cold. (Can be prepared 2 day ahead).

Divide soup between 2 bowls or large goblets. Serve with lemon wedges and a dollop of vanilla yogurt. Or use as a topping for ice cream or frozen yogurt.
